CBC launching HD in Calgary and Edmonton

CBC To Launch HD in Calgary and Edmonton

April 1 marks the debut of High-Definition CBC broadcasts on the network's Calgary and Edmonton affiliates.

From Heartland to The National to Hockey Night in Canada, viewers in the two Alberta centres will be able to enjoy HD CBC programs on Shaw Cable. Telus TV subscribers will have access on May 27 Calgary and Edmonton.

"With Calgary and Edmonton as Canada's third and fourth largest English TV markets respectively, we're really pleased to be adding these important members to Canada's CBC HD family," said Alan Dark, CBC's Executive Director of Media Sales and Marketing. "This will create some exciting new opportunities for regional and national brands to better resonate with people in the desired clarity of HD."

The move is consistent with the CBC's broader goal of more effectively connecting with audiences across the country in the formats in which they prefer.

Tsk. They failed to mention that CBC HD is available over the air in both markets.

That's because they don't care about OTA and would rather people forget about it and focus on cable/satellite instead. CBC is the public broadcaster and should be available to all Canadians via all possible outlets including OTA. Unfortunately for those in Southern Ontario they will lose CBC OTA come September as the Ceeb can't be bothered to convert the transmitters in London & Kitchener to digital.

Update: CBC Calgary's website now mentions the antenna channel number.
