And also where their based.
Yes, the fact that CTV & CBC's national news operations are based in Toronto is another factor.
I remember you did and yeah I think I did say something similar to that. Global BC does produce a staggering amount of news on its own and BC1 is not necessarily for them to properly cover breaking news but it's still great for the people who watch news channels get a BC alternative to the Toronto/U.S. based ones. The talk shows are a major plus as well.It was a no brainier that Global BC was going to be the first and only station to launch its own 24/7 regional news channel. I was predicting this for awhile, and if I remember correctly, I think you mention that Global BC current level of news was more than adequate
I was looking at the CRTC approvals, The regional CTV Newsnet BC was approved in 2000, BCTV pulled its CTV affiliation and VTV became CTV British Columbia in Fall 2001.I went back, according to the trademark database, a CTV NEWSNET B.C. and a CTV NEWSNET ALBERTA where filed in 2002, approved for use in 2004, but abandon in 2005. I do remember a CTV News 1 B.C logo also filed around this time, but the search on the trademark site isn't friendly to use. This was after the VTV era and during the Bell ownership (part 1) of CTV.
It wasn't really a "massive investment", all they did was add a desk and changed the logo to CTV. It's like painting the garage door and expecting your house value to go up thousands of dollars.
Oh no, CTV made massive investments at the station. Major staff and local programming increase, new studio, massive advertising campaigns, Vancouver's first news helicopter, lured away two high profile BCTV anchors with huge salaries (and pretty much offered BCTV's Tony Parsons a blank check), they even had more live trucks than BCTV. They spent a ton of money and really did their best to match the quality of BCTV's news programming. They may have not given BCTV any competition from a ratings standpoint but they certainly did quality wise and pushed BCTV to make improvements they normally wouldn't have done (even with little things, for example CTV started having their 6:00PM newscasts anchored live on location of major breaking stories and pushed BCTV to do the same). They didn't accomplish their goal (although I think most of the viewers CTV gained were BCTV viewers but it was offset by the fact that BCTV gained new viewers + the viewers who abandoned CKVU&CBC) but they certainly tried and I will give them credit for making such major investments at a weak station, I wish I could say the same for Bell who just last week started to make cuts at the station.![]()
