    Wait, that's a ridiculous statement.
The *National* newscast on Global is every day at 6:30pm for 30 minutes, meaning it's 3:30pm when the National newscast is being produced, but Global BC airs it at 5:30pm. How can they go "live" on a taped-3-hours-before show ?

P.S.: I just noticed Global National airs at 6:30pm in the Maritimes, meaning the Ontario/Quebec edition is at least one hour old as well. Wow.
We had a good run: 2006 to 2020. Thanks for the informations and debates.

    And also where their based.

Yes, the fact that CTV & CBC's national news operations are based in Toronto is another factor.

It was a no brainier that Global BC was going to be the first and only station to launch its own 24/7 regional news channel. I was predicting this for awhile, and if I remember correctly, I think you mention that Global BC current level of news was more than adequate
I remember you did and yeah I think I did say something similar to that. Global BC does produce a staggering amount of news on its own and BC1 is not necessarily for them to properly cover breaking news but it's still great for the people who watch news channels get a BC alternative to the Toronto/U.S. based ones. The talk shows are a major plus as well.

I went back, according to the trademark database, a CTV NEWSNET B.C. and a CTV NEWSNET ALBERTA where filed in 2002, approved for use in 2004, but abandon in 2005. I do remember a CTV News 1 B.C logo also filed around this time, but the search on the trademark site isn't friendly to use. This was after the VTV era and during the Bell ownership (part 1) of CTV.
I was looking at the CRTC approvals, The regional CTV Newsnet BC was approved in 2000, BCTV pulled its CTV affiliation and VTV became CTV British Columbia in Fall 2001.

It wasn't really a "massive investment", all they did was add a desk and changed the logo to CTV. It's like painting the garage door and expecting your house value to go up thousands of dollars.

Oh no, CTV made massive investments at the station. Major staff and local programming increase, new studio, massive advertising campaigns, Vancouver's first news helicopter, lured away two high profile BCTV anchors with huge salaries (and pretty much offered BCTV's Tony Parsons a blank check), they even had more live trucks than BCTV. They spent a ton of money and really did their best to match the quality of BCTV's news programming. They may have not given BCTV any competition from a ratings standpoint but they certainly did quality wise and pushed BCTV to make improvements they normally wouldn't have done (even with little things, for example CTV started having their 6:00PM newscasts anchored live on location of major breaking stories and pushed BCTV to do the same). They didn't accomplish their goal (although I think most of the viewers CTV gained were BCTV viewers but it was offset by the fact that BCTV gained new viewers + the viewers who abandoned CKVU&CBC) but they certainly tried and I will give them credit for making such major investments at a weak station, I wish I could say the same for Bell who just last week started to make cuts at the station.

It's only a ridiculous statement if you didn't read it properly.

I said they regularly go live to BC/Alberta when news warrants. So if a story changes or there's breaking news they do a live version at 5:30PM. There have been times when every single Global station had their own live version of Global National. They can do this because Dawna doesn't go home at 3:00PM PT. Lisa & Peter don't stay at work until 2:30AM ET to ensure that CTV National News or The National is updated with up to date stories for British Columbia, Global National can do this because they are produced in Vancouver and have the advantage of going live to Vancouver when news develops.

And FYI, CTV National News & CBC's The National are also both live for the Maritimes and pre-recorded for Ontario/Quebec. Double Wow.

I use an off air antenna, and I don't get the channel either. I would love it of Shaw added it as a sub channel, as 8.2 on the air, but they have now. Incidentally if they did broadcast it on the air, then the must carry rules would apply and you would see it on telus. Get your facts strait before opening your yap.

You need to contact shaw and find out why they have not made their BC1 news channel available to Telus before you start mouthing off and blaming Telus for this.Telus would love to carry the channel, but it is not a broadcast channel that falls under the rules of local must carry, it is a cable channel, and until Shaw decides that Telus, or Bell can carry this channel, they can not. It is the same reason that Bell does not carry FX Canada. That channel is owned by Rogers, and Rogers made that channel available to Telus, and Shaw for addition to their respective systems, but to date has not struck a deal with Bell.

Hi there, sorry I didn't see your response ealier, but what you are saying is incorrect. Shaw has made BC1 available to ALL cable and satellite companies, including Bell and Telus, and BC1 is already offered on other non-Shaw providers like Novus, Delta cable, and Coast cable. Bell and telus are 100% to blame for their customers not being able to access BC1. Shaw Media wants BC1 available on all providers, they make more money with BC1 available on all providers.

BC1 is not available as an Over-the-air channel because the OTA advertising only business model is not viable for a local 24/7 news channel and therefore it must operate under the same specialty model as channels like TSN, CBC News Network, and CTV News Channel. BC1 is only possible because it operates under the viable specialty model which provides it with access to the dual revenue stream model of advertising and subscription fees from cable and satellite companies.

Enough people subscribe to Shaw in BC for Global News BC 1 to be successful without carriage on Bell or Telus, but I think it's very unfair to Bell and Telus customers in BC to be deprived of the only news channel delivering 24/7 news from a BC perspective. Bell and Telus customers deserve BC's all news channel.
