Breaking Bad sudden success ?

I haven't watch that show, but I'm wondering what the hell is all the buzz about.

Season 4 ratings from 2011, the show had ratings between 1.5 and 2 million viewers.
Season 5 ratings from 2012, the show had ratings between 2 and 3 million viewers.

Last sunday's season premiere hit a wooping 5.92 million viewers, with a 2.9 rating in 18-49, beating the sh** out of HBO's True Blood with its still acceptable 4 million viewers and 2.2 rating.

So, 'the hell happend ?

Vince Gilligan (series creator) has credited binge watching on Netflix for Breaking Bad's more recent success. The series was given a lot of buzz last summer heading into the first part of the final season. Because the season was split, viewers were able to catch up during the hiatus.

I've been watching since the beginning. It's an amazing show and if you haven't seen it yet, get on it.

This show is one of the best shows on TV and I will miss it when it is gone. That being said, not all season were equal. There were time when I was disappointed in the show but I kept watching it because there were so many unexpected twists and turns that it kept me glued to my tv. All the actors were excellent and humour was place in the show to not make to as dark as it could be.

And the ratings obviously don't include the downloaders/streamers from unofficial sources, including file lockers (hip, hip hooray) and torrents.

[Aussies #1 in downloading the latest Breaking Bad episode]

This week Netflix did something a little special though and put up the latest episode of the series on the UK version of the service just a few hours after it aired on AMC. Judging from my personal attempts to play the show it took them six to seven hours to get the episode online.

And Netflix will continue to keep this fast publishing speed up for the remainder of the final series. It was an impressive turnaround but not entirely unprecedented.

Unfortunately, even with the option to watch the episode promptly in pretty easy and affordable ways, many people still chose to illegally download the latest episode. Torrentfreak reported that it was “well on its way to beat the record of 2,580,000 downloads it set last year” with the most downloads, of the most popular torrent file, coming from Australia.

In Australia the show aired on the pay channel Foxtel – just five hours after it aired in America – but sadly, according to the stats at Torrentfreak, the majority of illegal downloads were happening in Australia. Next on the list was the United States; then Canada, where it also airs on AMC; then the UK; and in fifth place was The Netherlands. Although I can’t seem to find any more info on this, Torrentfreak mention in their report that Breaking Bad actually aired in The Netherlands before it did in America - and on public television.

One must presume that the illegal downloads were fans that wanted to grab a copy for a rewatch but don’t own a DVR. Or perhaps wanted a copy to watch on a portable device. Illegally downloading the show in this instance really does seem like a very odd choice to make indeed. I do honestly believe that many people have already begun to shift from illegally downloading to the legal alternatives that have become available in recent years but news that this show was so heavily downloaded despite the many options on offer is rather depressing.

The next episode of Breaking Bad, called Buried, will air on Sunday. I’ll be patiently waiting just the few hours it will take to appear on Netflix and watching it there. Hopefully the more people that do that the more likely Netflix and other companies like them, including television networks, will be inclined to follow a similar pattern with other shows.

*The Hollywood Reporter have pointed out the many angry iTunes users who bought a season pass for Breaking Bad when it began its run of Season 5 and have only now found out that that only covered the first eight episodes.

AMC to Air Marathon of Entire Run of 'Breaking Bad' Prior to Finale; Hour Long 'Talking Bad' to Immediately Follow Final Episode

AMC’s newest drama, “Low Winter Sun” will shift to 11:15PM ET/PT, following “Talking Bad” on Sunday, September 29 only. In the episode entitled “Revelations,” written by Dave Erickson and directed by Adam Davidson, Frank testifies in court and Geddes takes his family on a trip. Meanwhile, Damon and Maya start their new lives under Skelos.

To ensure that AMC pause to appropriately commemorate “Breaking Bad,” and also serve “Low Winter Sun” fans who want to watch on a regular schedule, this episode of “Low Winter Sun” will also be available to fans on AMC On Demand starting Monday, Sept 23, 1-week prior to its linear premiere, on both VOD and TVE platforms. It will then repeat again on October 6 at 8pm ET/PT, leading into the 2-hour finale of season one of “Low Winter Sun.”

AMC is taking advantage of the Breaking Bad mania that is sweeping the nation. The network is turning the September 29 series finale into a five day long event. AMC will marathon all 46 episodes of the show starting Wednesday, September 26 at 8PM. An hour long episode of Talking Bad will immediately follow the 75-minute long series finale, at 10:15PM. Low Winter Sun will be pushed back to 11:15PM.
