Family Guy kills off Brian

In last night’s episode, ominously titled “Life of Brian,” it was announced that Brian had been run over by a car, just like that.

... Brian was replaced with a new talking dog named Vinnie, described as a “pooch with attitude,” and unmistakably voiced by Sirico, best known for his portrayal of wiseguy Paulie (Walnuts) Gaultieri on The Sopranos...

... fans have already taken to Twitter to voice their displeasure.
... “Well they killed Brian… And replaced him with a crappy Italian stereotype. Awful just awful.”

MacFarlane acknowledged that he should have ended Family Guy two or three years ago, then somewhat unconvincingly partly retracted the statement later. He has since had a successful movie in Ted, but then Fox cancelled his other two animated series, his attempted Flintstones reboot was rejected, and no one seems to have been impressed by his attempts at live action TV series. It makes me wonder what might really be behind killing off what's always been a main character he has voiced on Family Guy since it began, and then seemingly replacing it in such a clichéd and "jumped the shark" manner, almost as if he's mocking the continuation of his own show.
The way they describe the replacement as a "pooch with attitude" makes me think of the Simpsons episode that had a boardroom-ordered allegedly focus-group-derived new dog character , "Poochie" (voiced by Homer), introduced to Itchy and Scratchy, that was universally despised and quickly dumped.

I've heard a couple rumours that Brian may come back to life later in the season or next season through something Stewie comes up with. Its all speculation but Brian's departure may not be permanent. Usually spoilers like this tend to come out before the episode airs. Kudos to the team for keeping it a closely guarded secret.

... executive producer Steve Callaghan ... assured the press that Brian's death is final, a good proportion of fans posting online aren't buying it.
For starters, there have been future episodes announced that have Brian figuring in them - including one in which Maya Rudolph voices a marathon runner with whom Brian falls in love.

He apparently also made a comment about how the next few episodes would play out with no Brian, and it's well known that these episodes take more than a year to get produced after they are written. They are dishonestly trying to fool people in any case -- either by releasing false information about future episodes if Brian is actually gone for good, or by making people think he was gone when they will be bringing him back.
