Icon14 Mr. Robot on the USA Network and Showcase

Mr. Robot ... It's got hacking and a Neil Diamond song ... what else do you need?

How about robots? Sure, but not the kind you're thinking of.

    Grade: A (8/10)

While watching Mr. Robot, I kept thinking that I was watching the first hour of a low-budget independent movie that was released as a VOD preview. Nope, it wasn't a movie, but rather the pilot episode of a new USA Network series scheduled to be released in June. Showcase will air it in Canada.

I enjoyed the pilot episode, even though it was not always a pleasant experience. I'm not sure this series is something that I will look forward to watching future episodes of, but I'm pretty sure I will not be able to ignore it. I'm curious to see when, or if, this series falls off the rails, so I will certainly return for the remaining episodes. I'm skeptical that Mr. Robot will take me where I want to go, but if I end up somewhere I never expected, that should be good enough.

What a difference two more episodes make. Yuck. Episodes 2 and 3 of Mr. Robot were dull and even more dreary than necessary. Oh well, I've still seen worse. I'll hang in there, hoping it improves in the second season.

    GRADE for episodes 2 and 3: D minus (4.5/10)

Mr. Robot got a bit more interesting as the series progressed, but since the main character was often behaving like a zombie, I just kept hoping that he would just shut up and let the other characters take over.

The season finale was pretty much a colossal bore (although there were a few moments that I enjoyed), and to add insult to injury, there was an extra scene tacked on after the end credits that seemed completely unnecessary and only added to the boredom.

Overall, the entire series was made up of shining moments that failed to provide a satisfying conclusion. There were also plenty of F-bombs that were censored out (perhaps Showcase will leave them in) of the episodes, but I got used to it after a while.

So, thanks for the wonderful pilot episode, shame about the rest ... Domo Arigato, Mr. Robot Oh I hope Season 2 is better.

Disclaimer: People seem to love this series, not sure why.

EDIT: After reading the comments about the season finale, I can see why so many people liked it. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't aware of, or impressed by the various clever things that they spoke of (including the stuff that the extra scene after the end credits dealt with).

I rather enjoyed the show, looking forward to see where it goes from here. I liked the initial premise of Elliott as the vigilante hacker going after the scum of the earth (child molesters) and exposing their dark secrets. Unfortunately they deviated away from this as the season went on, focusing on the broader storyline of fsociety taking down EvilCorp.
