– Most talked about new series of the year Lethal Weapon, 24: Legacy, and Prison Break join proven performers in City’s strongest schedule to date –

TORONTO (June 6, 2016) City today unveiled a new prime-time schedule that strengthens its position as Canada’s most dynamic network, combining next season’s most anticipated new series with the country’s favourite returning programming. Building upon a youthful foundation of Canada’s most-watched returning programming, City’s 2016/17 schedule will be presented this afternoon by Rick Brace, President, Rogers Media and the executive team at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

“This is the strongest programming lineup City has ever had. Our investment in producing and securing world-class content for the City schedule reflects our deep and continued commitment to Canadians’ love of television and the success of this powerful medium,” said Brace. “As the media industry continues to evolve, the one thing that remains constant is that TV is still the most relevant medium for viewers and advertisers and is the best place to reach a mass audience.”

Among the highlights of City’s 2016/2017 prime-time schedule are:

• The season’s most recognized and highly anticipated new dramas – 24: Legacy, Prison Break, and Lethal Weapon
• Eight new and returning television event specials
• Three all-new original series – Bad Blood: The Vito Rizzuto Story, Nirvanna The Band The Show, and digital-first comedy, Second Jen
• Four new dramas and three new comedies join the 2016/17 City schedule

Built for stability and success on every night of the week, our schedule has something for everyone.”

Newly acquired content for the 2016/17 season includes the most sought-after dramas of the year, with the acquisition of three of next season’s biggest blockbusters: Lethal Weapon, 24: Legacy, and Prison Break. Reinvigorating three of the most iconic and beloved franchises in film and TV history – City will be the only place to catch the action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled, can’t-miss-a minute reboots this season.

“24: Legacy, Prison Break, and Lethal Weaponall come from world-renowned franchises that can be summed up in just one word – blockbusters,” added Watson. “Instantly recognizable titles that are synonymous with the quality and entertainment viewers know and love, these series have a built-in audience base that will propel them to success this season.”

Comedy is still King on Sundays when new live-action/animated hybrid Son of Zorn joins the Sunday night comedy lineup. Featuring the voice of Jason Sudeikis (The Last Man On Earth, Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers), Son of Zorn follows an animated warrior who returns to Orange County, CA to win back the love of his live-action ex-wife (Cheryl Hines, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and teenage son (Johnny Pemberton, 21 Jump Street).Also new to the Sunday comedy block is original series,Nirvanna The Band The Show,joining all-new seasons of Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers,and The Last Man on Earth.

Also heading to the fall schedule are the new-to-City comedy, The Odd Couple,and just announced original series, Second Jen,a relatable coming-of-age comedy about two second-generation millennials who move out to prove to their immigrant families, and themselves, that they can make it on their own.

Adding to the lineup of premium scripted content, City continues to build strength in established marquee event programming. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a brand-new reimagining of the cult-classic midnight movie is set to take over the City schedule this fall, along with the new must-see family musical event Hairspray Live! and Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love.Weekends remain the home of must-see sports programming with Hockey Night in Canada heading back to City every Saturday night, and Thursday Night NFL returns for six weeks this fall.

The 59^thAnnual GRAMMY Awards^®returns to the City mid-season schedule in 2017, along with the highly anticipated Aaron Sorkin television event special, a live production of A Few Good Men.

Anchoring the lineup of soon-to-be hits, City is staying true to established audiences through the 2016/17 season with a stable of returning hits from all genres, including Scorpion, 2 Broke Girls, Modern Family, Mom, Black-ish, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Life in Pieces, Hell’s Kitchen, New Girl, The Middle,and The Mindy Project .

Joining the City mid-season schedule are new titles Shots Fired, The Mick, and Making History, alongside returning series and Little Big Shots.
All programming is available on Citytv.com, and on mobile through the City Video app for iOS and Android. Fall premiere dates will be announced in the coming months; shows acquired but not yet listed on the schedule will premiere at a later date in the 2016/17 season.

Hoping to get a fresh start and meet less shallow people, Dan invented time travel. This invention allows Dan to live a double life in the colonial age where he has a girlfriend, Deborah. While imprisoned in Colorado’s Supermax Prison for the murders of three Bonanno family members, Rizzuto watches helplessly as the thriving empire he built is dismantled, and his closest friends and family members are mysteriously murdered one by one. When Rizzuto is finally released from prison, a Shakespearean-level revenge tale plays out - leading to the brutal murders of his closest companions, and ultimately the death of Rizzuto himself.

Interesting moves...

- The Odd Couple had a somewhat irregular broadcast on CTV mainly due to CBS burning episodes on mondays and thursdays, but CTV could have kept it anyway and dump it on CTV Two.
- Rogers also had the option to simulcast NBC's thursday NFL games starting Nov 17 and timeshift CBS sitcoms to friday. But they didn't.
- CW's Supergirl is nowhere to be found. Showcase or Shomi are more likely.
- Also rumoured but turned out false is Citytv picking up Simpsons...
- Citytv made a bold move to premiere two original shows for the fall. Thumbs up.

I presume that CityNews will continue to air on both Saturday and Sunday just like they are already doing, and based on what is listed below:

The supper newscasts normally run for a full hour - the only exception will be on Saturday when they air the pre-game show for Hockey Night in Canada.

Noteworthy : CBS has a NFL game scheduled Oct 20th, but it's obviously dumped to Sportsnet in order to simulcast Fox's "Rocky Horror Picture Show" live special.

That is going to be an interesting date to watch out for. The Canadiens are scheduled to play on October 20 so if the hockey game is carried on City Montreal, the live special gets bumped until after the game. It might also become a scheduling dilemma for Sportnset, as the MLB playoffs are happening at the same time, and they have the Canadian broadcast rights to just about every playoff game, so the NFL game may end up being transferred to Sportsnet One or Sportsnet 360.

With Thursday Night Football being split between CBS and NBC for five games each this coming season, it looks like City will be carrying four of the five games airing on CBS, and then Sportsnet will be carrying the five additional NBC games in November and December. Overall, Rogers retains the Canadian rights to the Thursday NFL games.

And With FOX scheduling the live Rocky Horror Picture Show musical on Thursday, October 20, both Rosewood and new series Pitch will be on the air for four weeks (beginning September 22) to start off the season. The World Series could also pre-empt both shows for one, possibly two weeks depending on the schedule. Global has a three-week window (from October 27 to November 10) when both CBS and NBC will be running their regular primetime lineups, so in the event that FOX's Pitch gets benched due to the World Series, Global has some flexibility in moving Chicago Med into the Thursday slot and airing in simulcast with NBC. Of course, that also depends on the eventual crossovers between the Chicago shows, something that NBC will be looking to take advantage just before the NFL games start airing in November.

As hinted by blogger Fagstein, Rogers released its 2016-17 Canadiens schedule, all 38 regional games will air on Sportsnet East. No more hockey games on Citytv Montreal except saturday Hockey Night in Canada, where we all know Toronto Leafs have priority on CBC and, just like last winter, eastern Winnipeg games have priority on Citytv. Canadiens games may popup on Citytv as last resort.

Thanks to ever-complaining Quebecor whose TVA Sports channel struggles financially and most likely asked Rogers to stop giving the games away for free on basic cable / over the air.


As for City Montreal, Rogers just gave up on the station since last january when they yanked all regional games, operating it like FX or G4. Example, last june, Global Montreal Morning News lost both its anchor and weather lady, while CTV axed Canada AM. Instead of trying to do something to pickup strayed viewers to BT Montreal, they just treated BT like any airing of Murdoch Mysteries. Advertisement insertion is done in Toronto, so they go on and advertise Rogers Ignite, the triple-play (with TV and Internet) while french-broadcaster TVA will air Rogers cellphone promos that never airs ever on City Mtl. HELLO !!! Rogers has no cable service whatsoever in Quebec (except a few townships in Gaspésie near the N-B border), and ends at the Ottawa/Gatineau border, at the river.

Also problematic is the low-level 1-minute long "Canada Protection Plan" life insurance commercial they keep playing at almost every commercial break during BT Montreal, and yes, they go on a commercial break every 8-10 minutes. When you get hammered with the same platitude 5-6 times in an hour during a live morning show you less likely PVR and FF» commercials, you will WANT to switch channel.

Next saturday, City Montreal will air 9 hours of Murdoch Mysteries, and next sunday, 10 hours, while City Toronto gets 6 hours on saturday and 8 hours on sunday. On weekdays, we get 3 Murdoch episodes per day corresponding to all 3 hours of Toronto local news.

The next day, Rogers complains to the CRTC that City Montreal is losing a loaded s**t of money so they need to do major licence changes, for the worse... Well, that's what happens when you run a local station like s**t !

I would not be surprised to see all of the CTV Two affiliates shut down at the end of their license term next year and I can see the exact same fate for CHCH and CHEK. I've also read that both Thunder Bay stations are on life support too.

One thing that is apparent now then it was 5+ years ago is online programming. Today you can get the same programming via Netflex.Crave TV ,Shomi and other online services.

Now grant you I'm "old school" and watch my programs the old fashion way by network watching and see the commercials. I'm not sure if Crave TV, Shomi Netflex or other online services have commercials or not., but online programming has takebn quite "bite" out the regular TV watching.

Lets face it TV watching is changing, as the "boomers" are more or less watching TV the old fashion way, the younger generation(under the 40-45 age )are watching via online services.

That's exactly what Canwest did when it turned its CH system into its version of the American E! channel, and look what came of that. Few viewers were willing to watch the imported celebrity/reality garbage from the American E! and they thought the E! format sucked, which sank the E! system and was one of the contributors toward Canwest's eventual demise.

Personally, I'd rather not see that happen (although the station owners are bringing this on themselves through greed and poor management - a huge reason why the big media companies need to be broken up like Standard Oil was stateside over a century ago). I'm thinking that Bell should keep CFPL and CHWI and bring those stations into the main CTV network and sell CHRO off to Corus (which could then turn it into a Global station). I'm also thinking that the Jim Pattison Group should buy CHEK, then buy and merge CIVI into CHEK, thus expanding its staff and adding to its program catalogue (there is precedent with such a move as some American stations have been purchased and merged into bigger stations before, like when Portland, Oregon stations KPTV and KLOR merged under KPTV's licence in 1957, or when on this side of the border, CJOH bought and merged Cornwall's CJSS-TV in 1963, turning the latter into the former's repeater). Laura Casella was replaced with Aalia Adam during her maternity leave. Aalia was let go in beginning of april, and figured out she went to CTV Montreal in the same month.

Joanne Vrakas is coming back from maternity leave Sept 26. Since there's no more "live eye" or field cam, Laura is out of a job. Aforementionned blogger confirmed yesterday Laura is becoming the new Global Montreal morning news anchor starting Oct 3rd.

Yep, Rogers didn't do s**t ! They just keep BT Montreal on the air to keep their end of the "local commitment" bargain, zero effort to on-air personnalities and promotion. They just gave up.

That's exactly what Canwest did when it turned its CH system into its version of the American E! channel, and look what came of that.

I don't mean brand the channel as a specialty channel, what I mean is CTV, CTV 2, Global, Citytv and other independent stations are going to have to go to a subscription model and charge consumer for access. Right now you get them free OTA and the cable systems carry the channels at no charge. That is going to have to change at some point. Many people record shows and skip commercials or they wait until they are available on demand with limited or no commercials. There is basically no real money left in ad only revenue which is why most medium and small market stations lose money.
