Reality Juggernaut Big Brother Canada is Renewed for a Fifth Season

    Toronto, Canada –
Today, Global unveiled its magnetic 2016/2017 primetime schedule, adding 11 of the most sought-after new series this season to its heavyweight roster of longstanding hits. Building on Global’s solid schedule which garnered nearly 20 million weekly viewers last fall, including its successful fan favourites, NCIS franchise (NCIS, NCIS: LA, and NCIS: New Orleans) which reached nearly 6 million weekly viewers and the Chicago franchise (Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med) which reached over 4 million weekly viewers, plus #1 reality series Survivor, and Top 20 hit series The Blacklist, the Network welcomes seven new dramas and four new comedies. With a total of 15 hours of simulcast television, Global’s schedule is set to deliver viewers an incredible entertainment experience this fall.

“Global’s new shows were strategically selected to build on our powerful franchises, deliver a younger audience through comedy and add strong buzz worthy dramas to our existing slate,” said Barb Williams, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Corus Entertainment. “Add to that 15 hours of simulcast and Global’s lineup is positioned to captivate big audiences this fall.”

    NEW DRAMAS

Global welcomes five new dramas to the primetime schedule beginning this fall:

    Bull
    – Former NCIS star Michael Weatherly moves from one of the most-watched dramas to one of the most-anticipated new dramas, Bull. From the same producers of NCIS,
the smart series is inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw during his days as head of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time.

    Pitch
    – Montreal born Kylie Bunbury (Under The Dome) stars as Ginny Baker in one of fall’s most buzzed-about new series Pitch. The emotional drama follows a young pitcher who becomes the first woman to play Major League Baseball. Pitch also stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Franklin & Bash), Mark Consuelos (All My Children), and Ali Larter (Heroes).

    MacGyver
    – From Hawaii Five-0 show-runner Peter Lenkoff, MacGyver is a reimagining of the iconic series about 20-something Angus “Mac” MacGyver (Lucas Till, X-Men: Apocalypse) who creates a clandestine organization within the US government where he uses his extraordinary talent for unconventional problem solving and vast scientific knowledge to save lives.

    Pure
Genius – From the executive producer of Parenthood and Friday Night Lights comes a unique medical drama centered around a young Silicon Valley tech billionaire (Augustus Prew, The Borgias) who builds the ultimate cutting-edge hospital that treats only the most rare and insurmountable medical mysteries – at no cost. Lending credibility to this new venture is a maverick surgeon (Dermot Mulroney, Shameless) who’s the first to discover that his boss’s mission is to get bureaucracy out of medicine, use the most forward thinkers in technology, and just save lives – including his own.

    Timeless
Starring Abigail Spencer (Suits) and Matt Lanter (90210), Timeless is a thrilling action-adventure series that follows a group of unlikely heroes thrust into the adventure of their lives. Chasing a mysterious group of criminals through time and encountering some of the most seminal moments in history, the group attempts to thwart a dark conspiracy that is a threat to all of humanity.

    NEW COMEDIES

Along with the compelling new lineup of dramas, Global also adds four new comedies headlined by some of Hollywood’s biggest comedic stars, creating two new primetime comedy
    blocks:

    Kevin Can Wait
    – Monday nights start off with Kevin Can Wait, a hilarious comedy starring Kevin James (King of Queens) as a newly retired police officer who looks forward to spending more quality time with his wife and three kids – only to discover he faces much tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets.

    Man With a Plan
    – Also airing on Mondays is Man With a Plan, starring Golden Globe® Award-winner Matt LeBlanc (Episodes, Friends) whose wife goes back to work, leaving him with the kids and to discover the truth that every parent eventually realizes: their little angels are maniacs.

    The Good Place
    – The laughs continue Thursday nights on Global with The Good Place, a unique new comedy starring Kristen Bell (House of Lies, Veronica Mars), and Ted
Danson (Fargo) that follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Bell), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife where she comes to realize that she hasn’t been a very good person.

    The Great Indoors
    – Comedian Joel McHale (Community, The Soup) also joins Global’s new Thursday comedy block starring in the insightful and timely comedy The Great Indoors. As a renowned adventure reporter who’s spent his life exploring the edges of the earth for an outdoor magazine, Jack (McHale) must now adapt to the times when he becomes the desk-bound boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of the publication. The new comedy also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad).

    MID-SEASON

Rounding out the newly acquired series, Global’s mid-season schedule expands two of its beloved franchises:

Chicago Justice – Powerhouse creator Dick Wolf delivers Chicago Justice, the fourth captivating installment to the Chicago series. Starring Philip Winchester (Strike Back) and Nazneen Contractor (Heroes Reborn), the legal drama follows the State’s Attorney’s dedicated team of prosecutors and investigators as they navigate heated city politics and controversy head-on while fearlessly pursuing justice.

The Blacklist: Redemption – The mid-season lineup also welcomes a new spin-off to hit series The Blacklist with The Blacklist: Redemption starring Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist) and Famke Janssen (X-Men). The thrilling drama follows undercover operative Tom Keen (Eggold) who joins forces with Susan “Scottie” Hargrave (Janssen), the brilliant and cunning chief of Grey Matters, a covert mercenary organization that solves problems governments don’t dare touch.

    CANADIAN ORIGINALS

Along with the new slate of acquisitions, Global is set to bring a new crop of outstanding Canadian original content, as the Network dives into production on two new original series, set to premiere mid-season:

    Ransom
    – As announced yesterday, Global, together with TF1 (France) green lit new original suspense drama Ransom, starring Luke Roberts (Black Sails, Game of Thrones), with CBS joining as a broadcast partner for the series. Production on Ransom will begin later this summer.

    Mary Kills People
    – Also in production this summer, Global’s gripping new original drama Mary Kills People has cast Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal) as the series lead. The provocative six-episode series follows Dr. Mary Harris (Dhavernas), a single mother and emergency doctor, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death – helping terminally ill patients who want to die slip away on their own terms. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar; but her double life gets complicated when the police start to close in, forcing Mary to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.

    Big Brother Canada
    – After its most successful season yet, with an average audience of almost 1.2 million viewers per episode (2+) – growing audiences with total viewers and key demos A18-49 and A25-54 versus Season 3, reality champ Big Brother Canada returns for a fifth season of competing, scheming, and household chaos. Based on Endemol Shine Group’s worldwide hit franchise and commissioned by Corus Entertainment Inc., Season 5 of Big Brother Canada is produced by Insight Productions in association with Corus Entertainment Inc.

    RETURNING HITS

Global’s schedule will continue to be anchored by its veteran fan favourite series including Madam Secretary, Elementary, Survivor, Hawaii Five-O, and The Simpsons. Viewers can also get their late-night TV fix with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airing weeknights, along with the successful longstanding Saturday Night Live on Saturday nights.

Mary Kills People ... I like the fact that it's a limited 6-episode series. Leave me wanting more ... not less (like what happens with most of the bloated North American series I watch).
Warning: I'm not playing with a full deck.

Timeless sounds like I'll be interested for at least a few episodes, and I'll tune in to see if Abigail Spencer can get me hooked.

Now I have to go back and watch Abigail's one-season series Angela's Eyes (2006- Lifetime) online. I don't remember ever seeing it, but at least the Internet seems to care enough to have saved it for me.

Citytv did the same thing with Between last summer. But hey, think of it on the good side, many TV series produced in the UK have a short 6-episodes run, but it takes them 2 whole years to put a 2nd season of only 6 episodes back on the air.

    Anyway...

Almost all of Global's pickups somehow falls into places in a puzzle.
    - NBC's The Good Place and The Blacklist airs in thursdays in the fall in simulcast while CBS has football. There will be maybe three weeks of overlap between oct 27 and nov 17, when it'll be NBC's turn to air thursday NFL games, then then'll simsub CBS's Great Indoors and Pure Genius.
    - On Monday, CBS's Kevin Can Wait premieres after TBBT, Man with a Plan doesn't premiere until the last week of october when Kevin moves up to 8pm, but wasn't taken into consideration in above schedule.
    - As predicted, Simpsons in pre-release at 7:30pm sundays, Chicago Fire in pre-release mondays and Chicago Med in pre-release wednesdays.
We had a good run: 2006 to 2020. Thanks for the informations and debates.

During one of those three weeks, there are a number of possible scenarios:
FOX may carry a World Series game on Thursday so in that case, Pitch gets pre-empted.

As mentioned in another Global-related thread, they can temporarily use Thursday 7:00pm to run a show in pre-release. Of course, by then, CTV will also be doing the same thing with Grey's Anatomy, so that could make things interesting, especially in the event of crossovers with the Chicago franchise shows.

So Global can use the Monday 8:00pm timeslot for shelved episodes of half-hour shows including The Simpsons or reliable CanCon fare like Border Security (which will also air Sunday 7:00pm). They used Border Security as a time-filler on Friday nights last fall until the cancelled sitcoms Truth Be Told and Angel from Hell made their premieres.

I went 2-for-3 in the above predictions. I wasn't so convinced that The Simpsons would remain on Global given the numerous times it's been on the bench for the last two seasons, but great for them to retain the rights for one of the longest running animated sitcoms on TV.

Unlike CTV and CTV Two, Global has not released a 24-hour schedule. There will be a hole in their daytime lineup this fall as The Meredith Vieira Show has been cancelled. My guess is they could bring back The Doctors, which they have been airing in latenights - even more of an incentive now that there are no longer CanCon restrictions during the daytime.

The syndication well for this fall has turned up dry. Outside of Harry Connick Jr.'s new talk show (picked up by yesTV), it's pretty much the same old, same old... whatever is returning and already airing on the Canadian networks will continue, everything else that does not generate interest remains stateside. In the case of CHCH, they may be looking to acquire shows for their daytime block, especially since they cut down on their live news coverage and replaced it with reruns of 20/20, CanCon show The Pinkertons, and shows from Bloomberg TV Canada.

The article keep reffering to the show as produced for National Geographic Channel. I dunno if Global aired all episodes or if they kept the most recent season exclusive to NatGeo... One thing for sure, "It's not a rerun if you haven't watched it yet." :p

This would make a good April Fool's Day joke, but it looks like a Mexican actually saved us from "despicable" Canadian content.

I hope Trump gets his wall built, so more Mexicans will be tempted to come to Canada and perhaps help us get rid of even more Canadian content.

    God Bless, Mexico.

Disclaimer: I've only seen about 12 seconds of one Border Security episode, so it's entirely possible (though unlikely) that I missed out on a Canadian classic. Oh well, I can't watch everything.

Global has lost the Canadian rights to the syndicated talk show The Doctors, which has been airing in the overnight hours. Effective this fall, it will be airing on City.

At this point, nothing else is known about Global's fall programming lineup outside of primetime. Aside from losing The Doctors and The Meredith Vieira Show (the latter being cancelled), the remaining shows are expected to return:

    DAYTIME
    Rachael Ray (syndicated)
    Days of Our Lives (s-NBC)
    The Talk (s-CBS)
The Young and the Restless (post-CBS)

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (s-CBS) will continue to anchor their latenight lineup, which also includes encore broadcasts of Entertainment Tonight and Entertainment Tonight Canada, along with reruns of various CanCon specialty programming from the Shaw Media / Corus library.

Information taken from advanced listings on Zap2it effective Monday, September 12.

    Notes:
Global appears to be going full CanCon weekday mornings, with Rachael Ray moving to mid-afternoons and filling the timeslot that previously belonged to The Meredith Vieira Show.

New to Global's daytime lineup is Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, now entering its 15th season in syndication. It's never been picked up regularly on Canadian networks, having previously aired on TheNewNets / A-Channel (CHUM) and CHCH (only once a week in 2013-14).

As previously mentioned, The Doctors moves to City this fall, and as expected, overnights have same-day encores of Entertainment Tonight (both Canada and US), followed by more CanCon, so no significant changes this fall.

Global Montreal will pretty much air the same lineup as Toronto. The only main difference is local news.

I will work to post the weekend schedule in the upcoming days.

On mon Sept 26th, all 4 networks have the Presidential Debate. For Global, CBS's Kevin Can Wait airs in simsub as usual at 8:30pm, but at 8pm, they scheduled The Carmichael Show S2 premiere, which initially aired march to may 2016 on NBC that Global left on a shelf all this time.

Also, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend stops (yesterday) after the 11th episode.
We had a good run: 2006 to 2020. Thanks for the informations and debates.

Global also has scheduled the first two episodes of FOX summer series Hotel Hell season 3 for that evening from 9:00pm to 11:00pm.

Seems like they have an inventory of shelved programming (that they did not air this past spring or summer) that will serve as filler for regular shows that are pre-empted or in timeslots waiting to be filled until the season or series premieres take effect. Some of those shows will almost carry over in to the holiday season.

Having said that, The Carnichael Show will likely run until Kevin Can Wait moves to 8:00pm on Monday, October 24. Hotel Hell has eight episodes - they will probably get three on the air before Chicago Fire takes over the Monday 9:00pm timeslot. My guess is that another summer show Running Wild with Bear Grylls will turn up as filler during the holidays (similar to what they did with Food Fighters season 1 in 2014; it originally aired on Food Network that summer with NBC, while Global delayed it until a few months later).

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 1 has seven episodes remaining to air.

Last but not least, Global has reserved CanCon blocks on Friday 10:00pm with Undercover Boss Canada (W Network), Border Security replaces the cancelled 16x9 on Saturdays along with reruns of Rookie Blue.
Sundays 7:00pm is CanCon filler with more Border Security leading in to The Simpsons in pre-release at 7:30pm.

Tonight, Global has CBS' special "The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey" in simulcast at 8:30pm, which happens after NFL football and 60 Minutes. If the NFL game goes overtime, will Global make us wait with a Border Security filler until 60 Minutes is done ?

Speaking of The Case Of, CBS has trim the special from 6 to 4 hours, therefor they upped NCIS:LA season premiere to 2 hours on Sept 25th,

Looks like Global decided, for now, to occupy the friday 10pm slot with The CW's Supergirl, starting Oct 14th.
Supergirl airs in simulcast (but not simsub) on Showcase.

I noticed that too. Not sure if this is going to be regular scheduling, as The CW is also using that same Friday evening at 8:00pm for an encore of the Supergirl season premiere. We'll wait and see next week.

Meanwhile, Showcase has planned multiple airings of Supergirl that week starting Monday at 8:00pm, followed by encore presentations at 10:00pm and 1:00am. It will also air several more times either the following day on Tuesday (according to the show's page on Showcase's website), on Thursday that week in the timeslots currently occupied by Scorpion (according to Zap2it) then again on Sunday at 5:00pm (according to the TV Guide mobile app whose advanced listings can go as far as 16 days).

Speaking of other CW shows, Global is bringing back Crazy Ex-Girlfriend next Saturday (October 8) at 9:00pm, resuming from where it left off in its summer run with episode 12 from season 1 and seven episodes remaining. Outside of simsubbing encores of CBS crime dramas or some of the new shows (they're running a marathon of NBC comedy The Good Place tonight), Global may potentially use these slots to burn off their current shelved programming (Hotel Hell, The Carmichael Show).

Global has opted to air NCIS: New Orleans in pre-release starting on Monday, October 10 in favour of simsubbing the season premiere of Chicago Fire with NBC on Tuesday, October 11.

As expected... Showcase premieres its new original series "Travelers" monday oct 17, so the series premiere will air on Global in that friday 10pm timeslot Oct 21.

Not sure what will happen to Supergirl S02E02 on Global.

Last year, Global announced "The Code" which became "Private Eyes" and premiered May 26th, after the season finale weeks. They also had Houdini & Dull, that ITV in the UK premiered in march, but waited to air it in simsub with Fox in may.

So, if you were waiting for Mary to come to the schedule by January 2017, well, that's just not how Global operates. With the Lifetime US twist, it's predictible that Mary will premiere on Lifetime Canada in simulcast with Lifetime US in order to get Twitter buzz from both countries, THEN it will premiere on Global. Since UnReal premiered on the 1st week of june for its first two seasons...

On Oct 30th (sunday) after the baseball game, it was clear a 6th game was necessary on Fox, which was scheduled Nov 1st.

On Oct 31 at 3PM, CBS issued a programming advisory about scheduling repeats for Nov 1st (NCIS, Bull, NCIS:NO) due to that game :
    http://thefutoncritic.com/news/2016/...20161031cbs03/

Since Global airs NCIS:NO 25 hours in advance on mondays, an uninformed canadian source said there was a programming error at Global, but hey, they programmed a repeat that night accordingly, thanks to CBS's timely advisory.

Also, Global programmed a season 1 repeat of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on a saturday night not long ago, the following saturday they felt they had to simsub CBS's saturday night reruns. But for the next following saturdays, Global scheduled repeats of Rookie Blue, Combat Hospital and Remedy. Maybe they're holding 'em off for later?

    In other news...

"Bones: The Final Chapter" to Premiere Tuesday, January 3, on FOX

Damn. Bones vs. Bull... what to choose ?

On monday Dec 5th, there's the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show at 10pm, meaning they can't simsub NBC's Timeless. Mondays 9pm is usually empty for Global, but they scheduled the usual NCIS:NO pre-release there. Timeless has been moved to tuesday Dec 6th at 7pm, before the busy tuesday night lineup. And if you check sunday night Dec 4th schedule, CBS has reruns so Global has nothing that night.

Guess Global ain't authorized to air Timeless in pre-release... but... Newfoundland's NTV usually airs Timeless at 7pm ET.
