Toronto, Canada – Coming off of a highly successful fall season with three of the top five new fall series, Global rings in 2017 with a robust midseason primetime lineup. The network heads into the winter season with a schedule packed with Canada’s most-watched programing including this season’s most-anticipated new and returning series.

Kicking off the New Year are two new Canadian original drama series. Inspired by the professional experiences of distinguished crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert, comes Ransom, a high stakes suspense drama premiering on Sunday, January 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on Global. Starring Luke Roberts (Wolf Hall, Game of Thrones), as Eric Beaumont, a crisis and hostage negotiator whose team is brought in to save lives when no one else can, the series moves to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT starting January 4 and Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT beginning January 7. Then, Global’s compelling, new character-driven drama Mary Kills People joins the schedule Wednesday, January 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Set in the morally grey world of assisted death, the special six-part event series stars Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal) as Dr. Mary Harris, an overworked single mother and ER doctor, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death – working outside the law to help her patients slip away on their own terms.

The network also welcomes two highly-anticipated new spinoff series to its slate. From the creators of The Blacklist comes the thrilling new spinoff The Blacklist: Redemption premiering Thursday, February 23 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Global. Starring Famke Janssen (The Blacklist, X-Men) and Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist, All My Sons), the world’s most elusive criminals from Red’s infamous list come together to form an elite mercenary team as they try to regain their self-worth after a lifetime of inflicting damage on the world. Also premiering in March is the latest installment to the hit Chicago franchise, Chicago Justice, joining Global’s lineup Sunday, March 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Starring Philip Winchester (Strike Back) as prosecutor Peter Stone, the series follows the State’s Attorney’s dedicated team of prosecutors and investigators as they navigate heated city politics and controversy head-on, while fearlessly pursuing justice.

New episodes from Global’s hit fall schedule also return this January including the successful Monday night comedy block as the top two most-watched new comedies return January 2 with Kevin Can Wait (8 p.m. ET/PT) and Man With a Plan (8:30 p.m. ET/PT). Then breakout hit and Global’s most-watched drama Bull returns with all-new episodes Tuesday, January 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Global continues to dominate Friday nights with the return of one of fall’s top new series MacGyver premiering January 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT leading into fan favourite Hawaii Five-0 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Returning medical drama Pure Genius comes back in a special premiere slot on Sunday, January 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, then settles in its regular timeslot beginning Friday, January 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Fall’s hit time travel series Timeless is back Monday, January 16 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Additional heavy hitters returning include: NCIS: New Orleans (January 2), NCIS (January 3), NCIS: Los Angeles (January 8), and Chicago Fire (January 2), Chicago PD (January 3), and Chicago Med (January 5).

Rounding out the midseason schedule is Season 2 of arresting cop drama Shades of Blue starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, premiering Sunday, March 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, while last fall’s #1 reality series Survivor returns with Season 34 featuring an all-star cast of “game changers” beginning Wednesday, March 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Normally for CBS, most shows take a break after the february sweeps, march and april sees fewer new episodes, and CBS have many sports overtime so simsub won't happen, it just makes sense to simsub NBC and schedule CBS shows later.

NBC never had luck with scripted shows on sunday nights, so scheduling Chicago Justice and Shades of Blue there, it's experimental. It's in two months and a half, NBC can decide to move them around until then.

It looks like Global has delayed its part of its New Year's Day line up by 10 minutes to air RANDSOM and PURE GENIUS in similcast with CBS after a football overnun at 8:40/7:40 and 9:40/8:40 in the Eastern and Central time zones.

I PVR'ed both shows, but I decided to "peek" on Global at around 10:32pm because I had my doubts : Whenever there's football overrun, and a simsub followed by a filler at 10:30pm, Global will most likely delay to get the simsub as it doesn't push the 11pm local news. And they did. If the scheduled NCIS:LA episode at 10:30pm was new, Global would have scheduled the night otherwise.

I guess I'll simply PVR the Ransom series premiere next wednesday 8pm, watch Pure Genius on my PVR and catch the missing segment on Global's app.

That was a stupid move, it could have been worth it for a big Football overrun, but CBS had 60 Minutes before, so the big numbers were gone by the time they started Ransom.

I had put my recording to last an hour extra, so i was ok.

Ransom got really bad reviews in the States, so unless TF1 has good ratings for it, ti won't last long.

I wonder if Global will have The Good Fight somewhere on their schedule, or anyone else. It ill be on CBS Access only after the first episode, so nowhere to be found in Canada otherwise.

We'll see how it goes for Ransom. CBS is certainly not doing the show any favors by putting it on Saturday at 8:00pm, whereas Global is airing premiere episodes on Wednesday nights (against Blindspot and Lethal Weapon) in the timeslot usually filled by Survivor, which returns on March 8, for a potential run of at least nine episodes. The series was ordered for 13 episodes. Global will also be airing the Wednesday encores in simulcast with CBS on Saturday nights.

With the exception of shows like Flashpoint and Rookie Blue, the recent track record of Canadian co-produced series on U.S. network television has generally been a miss (i.e. Houdini and Doyle, Working the Engels, Motive, Saving Hope, Combat Hospital, The Listener, The Bridge). Motive moved to USA Network for the final two seasons following its cancellation on ABC. Most tofu the aforementioned shows went on to be cancelled within a short run before being demoted to channels generating less viewership, like ION Television. For the U.S. market, Netflix or another SVOD service would be more suitable as opposed to the broadcast networks.

As for The Good Fight, I assume that Corus has the Canadian rights. They can premiere it on any one of their specialty channels like W or Showcase (and make it available following broadcast on Global's website), or Global can acquire it exclusively on their website. Netflix is a small possibility, though any shows from CBS TV Studios in their library are very slim to none. Can't see this being picked up by CraveTV, but maybe Amazon.

The Firm (another co-production) was a flop on NBC and was moved to Saturdays. Since NBC paid next to nothing for it, it was no big deal that it flopped. It was filler tv for them, but I enjoyed it.

I didn't mind the pilot episode of Ransom, but since I watched the early-bird VOD showing on Global's website, I think I enjoyed it more than I normally would have, had it been released later.

Anyway, none of these co-productions need to be successful for the Americans, so if Ransom flops, nobody will lose any sleep over it. And Global can rerun the series till the cows come home (The Firm was recently rerun again on Global).

The Wednesday episodes of Random are repeats of the previous Saturday episode according to Zapt2it schedule (or Screener how they call it now) and Global's website. They had it has a new episode at first, but they have since update it with repeats of the Saturday (this week Sunday's) episode.

The Good Fight could go to W or Showcase I guess. They seem to want to add more scripted to W. They are moving Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce from Slice to W, with Nashville and the Hallmark shows they already have. They could do like Bell will do with Star Trek showing the premiere on CTV and then the series on Space.

On monday Feb 13 9pm, Global has scheduled Chicago Fire in pre-release instead of NCIS:NO, and there's a good reason for that : NCIS & NCIS:NO has a crossover on Feb 14. Wouldn't make sense the other way around anyway...

Speaking of Chicago Fire... NBC has programmed a 2-hours The Voice on tuesday Feb 28 followed by This Is Us at 10pm. CF is programmed wednesday March 1st at 8pm in a cross-over to Chicago PD at 9pm, leading to the series premiere of Chicago Justice at 10pm, following the same storyline.

Feb 28 lineup is changed due to Trump wanting to address to the nation at 9pm. NBC downgraded The Voice to 1-hour and This Is Us pushed one week, but it still mean The Flash remains dumped to CTV Two (I expect CTV to fill the remaining 2 hours with TBBT fillers). CBS already had a night of reruns scheduled anyway, so I expect Global to fill the remaining 2 hours with Border Security fillers. Fox has new episodes of New Girl and The Mick so Bones gets pushed, so I expect Citytv to fill the remaining hour with a Murdoch Mysteries filler.

As mentionned above, March 1st has the Chicago crossover, but Mary Kills People premiered Jan 25 with a 6-episodes run, so on web Feb 22, Global scheduled Chicago PD in pre-release at 8pm and run the last 2 episodes of Mary Kills People 9 to 11pm.

The Simpsons has been filling in as a substitute for the Monday sitcoms while they are in reruns. Superstore and The Great Indoors are currently on the shelf.

Quietly, Global has picked up NBC game show The Wall, which originally debuted back in December. The first episode will air Monday, March 27 at 8:00pm. My guess is that it will serve as a substitute for regular programming that is pre-empted or in reruns (in the same manner like they did with Hotel Hell during the fall). NBC has aired ten episodes so far and ordered 10 additional episodes scheduled to air Thursdays at 8:00pm in the summer, so Global will probably use the next months to catch up.

Speaking of summer, CBS and NBC have announced their summer plans this week. In terms of returning favourites and what Global aired last year, that includes new seasons of Big Brother and medical drama The Night Shift. There's also new seasons of The Carmichael Show (Season 2 was benched until the fall and has been sporadically airing on Saturday afternoons), so it's anyone's guess when they will get to Season 3, as well as reality competition series Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge (another show that Global started airing late in the summer after its run finished on NBC).
NBC is also turning the Weekend Update segments from Saturday Night Live into a weekly series that will run for four weeks starting Thursday, August 9.

Several advanced listings have Global airing the NBC reality series First Dates on Friday, April 21 at 8:00pm, starting with the third episode and leaving the first two on the shelf.

Global's website is now showing that Superstore will return with new episodes on Monday, May 29. Episode #16 (originally aired March 16 on NBC) is slated to air Friday, April 21 at 9:00pm followed by a shelved episode of CBS sitcom The Great Indoors (originally aired March 27) at 9:30pm (both in place of a Hawaii Five-O rerun).

On another note, Global's burning off the first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Saturday latenight (Sunday morning) at 1:00am following Saturday NIght Live beginning this weekend.
