TORONTO (June 6, 2017) – Proven, powerful, and pedigreed.Today Rogers Media unveils City’s 2017/18 programming schedule, building on last season’s proven hits with bold new additions backed by some of the most creative minds in television today. Rogers Media president, Rick Brace, and senior vice president of television & broadcast operations, Colette Watson, together with the executive team will present the new schedule to advertisers and media this afternoon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“With 10x the viewing hours of Netflix and nearly 10x the hours spent on social media, TV is still the most relevant way to reach consumers today,” said Brace. “And Canadians come to us to be entertained. Rogers Media properties reached more than 96% of Canadians last season – and we’re ready to welcome them back this year to be entertained with even more of what they love.”

Adding 12 new titles to a roster of proven hits, City’s schedule strikes a balance between proven performers, premium dramas, event programming, and laugh-out-loud comedies. The mix of fresh titles and fan favourites delivers something for everyone, every night of the week.

“The draw of the characters and the calibre of storytelling was the key to our success last season – Lethal Weapon is a great example,” added Watson. “Powered by the strength of the movie franchise, stellar cast, and fresh stories, the series boosted the previous timeslot by 169%. We made some strategic refinements to our schedule for 2017/18 and we expect the creative pedigree behind some of these new titles to have a similar impact.”

Comedies

This broadcast year, City had three of the Top 10 and eight of the Top 20 comedy hits, and City will continue to bring the laughs with five new comedy series for the 2017/18 season. Joining the fall lineup, The Orville, from Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane and director Jon Favreau, is an irreverent workplace sci-fi adventure comedy set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of the U.S.S. Orville, an exploratory spaceship, and the familiar and funny everyday challenges of its human and alien crew. The weird and wonderful out-of-this-world theme continues with Ghosted, when a cynical skeptic (Craig Robinson,The Office) and a genius “true believer” (Adam Scott, Parks and Recreation, Big Little Lies) are recruited to investigate unexplained phenomena in Los Angeles – all the while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race. Canadian cult classic Fubar moves to the small screen, propelling beloved characters Terry and Dean into the modern age. New-to-City, Speechless starring Minnie Driver joins the schedule in mid-season, along with new Will Ferrell-produced commuter comedy LA to Vegas .

Dramas

Power and political games drive City’s scripted drama slate for the 2017/18 season with four new series joining the lineup. A City original, Bad Blood follows the true-crime saga of one of Canada’s most notorious mob families, a revenge story of Godfather-like proportions. New-to-City this fall, hit series The Blacklist joins the schedule with prime-time’s favourite fugitive-turned F.B.I informant, “Red” Reddington (James Spader), as he teams up with his hand-picked profiler to work through his own “most wanted” list of criminals. Coming in 2018, Versailles is a lush Canadian drama about Louis XIV, and the darkness, ambition, and manipulation that simmers just beneath the gilded surface of the Sun King’s court. Also, a young doctor’s ethics are tested when The Resident, starring Canadians Emily VanCamp and Bruce Greenwood, joins City’s schedule in mid-season.

Reality / Live Events

Enhancing City’s strength in powerhouse reality franchises, Dancing with the Stars moves to City for the 2017/18 season, bringing a new cast of celebrity ballroom dancers together in competition for the coveted Mirrorball trophy. Building on the success of marquee live event programming, City presents a live musical event for the holidays, A Christmas Story, based on the beloved and iconic movie about Ralphie, whose only wish is for a Red Ryder BB gun under the tree. In 2018, an all-new live musical production of the Tony Award-, Grammy Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent will bring the unforgettable story of friendship, love, and hope among seven struggling artists in New York’s gritty East Village to a whole new audience in mid-season.

Proven hits and fan favourites return as City confirms the renewal of 16 prime-time series, delivering more laugh-out-loud moments, dramatic plot twists, and thrilling competition through the 2017/18 season. Early observations:

- As expected, City acquired the bulk of the new FOX shows for next season, except for The Gifted, which went over to CTV.

- Other key additions include The Blacklist (dropped from Global) and Dancing with the Stars, the latter of which will no longer be airing on CTV Two Sunday nights in post-release. Speechless did not have a Canadian broadcaster in its first season, but it is a co-production of 20th Century FOX and ABC Studios, and ties in with their existing output deal.

- An interesting pickup is Versailles, which has already been renewed for a third season. Canadian rights went to Super Channel but those were dropped. Subsequently, The Movie Network took over those rights having aired the first season. Season 2 premieres June 10 in Canada, several months after it originally aired in France. Seems to me like Rogers picked up the second window broadcast rights, if not the exclusive rights to the third season set to air in 2018.

- Among their sitcoms, only The Mick, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family and the FOX Sunday shows are scheduled to air in simulcast while Black-ish, The Middle and Speechless are in post-release. I thought they would have added American Housewife to complement Modern Family on Wednesday. I assume that Bob's Burgers will also be returning even though it's not listed. And with 2 Broke Girls cancelled, it looks like the weeknight strip reruns have also ended, in favor of Mom.

- I predicted that the Bad Blood miniseries would get the Thursday 8:00pm timeslot, seeing that City lost the rights to Thursday Night Football. It's less risky and makes sense since they do not have anything to simulcast in that hour and they will not have The Big Bang Theory to contend with. In terms of violence, well, there's also Gotham airing in the same hour.

- Finally, expect the gaps in the schedule to be filled with stuff from VICE, for which they have reserved a block Sundays at 10:00pm.

Llike I had mentioned in CTV's thread they should give it to City...Dancing with the stars is now on City. Made sense. Besides that not much surprise. I guess Bell either retain Gotham for Space or in case something failed or not. They are showing Blackish as simulcast on their schedule...

Sunday at 8 empty, probably repeats until Bob comes back. There is also the last season of The Mindy Project to schedule, but ignored on press release so maybe they dropped it?

The Monday DWTS pickup was weird, but logic. This year, CTV & Global have sudden interest in sitcoms so City had nothing to simulcast (NBC's Voice to CTV, CW's Supergirl & Valor to Showcase, CBS's sitcoms to CTV & Global)...

I keep wondering why Rogers keeps playing the "our schedule is full" card. They could easily schedule Middle & Black-ish tuesdays 10pm & 10:30pm, Speechless wednesdays 9:30pm, and swap the shows in simulcast whenever the other-show-at-the-same-time are in reruns or pre-empted, just like CTV and Global does... most of the time... One of the nasty consequences of waiting for the right time for advertisers to pay maximum for a show on the air is obviously the episodes taken hostage, online, which is unacceptable in 2017 when you can find a selection of shows tomorrow morning on Netflix.

I have noticed some inconsistencies in Rogers' press release and the fall preview page on the City website. My guess is that Speechless will air beginning in the fall along with The Middle - they list it as Fall 2017 on Fridays. There is also Versailles, airing Friday nights in midseason - supposedly when Hell's Kitchen ends its season. As for The Resident airing Mondays in midseason, that is clearly an error, seeing that FOX has not even scheduled where it would air yet. And they would face scheduling conflicts with The Bachelor, unless for whatever reason, it gets moved over to OMNI.

Outside of Global and CTV, other Canadian networks have not bothered programming primetime shows in the 10:00pm hour, except only when there is a simsub opportunity. On that note, I wish that I had a reasonable answer regarding Rogers' annoying practice of holding shows hostage after all this time - honestly I do not, but I can say with certainty that this only alienates viewers and will drive them away to suitable alternatives. At this point, they've given up trying to understand their logic.

Llike I had mentioned in CTV's thread they should give it to City...Dancing with the stars is now on City. Made sense. Besides that not much surprise. I guess Bell either retain Gotham for Space or in case something failed or not. They are showing Blackish as simulcast on their schedule...

Space has Supernatural in the Thursday 8:00pm timeslot, so highly unlikely that Gotham will air on Space, more likely on CTV Two.

Blackish showing as simulcast is obviously a typo. Rogers probably overlooked the fact that ABC has moved the show to Tuesday nights.

Sunday at 8 empty, probably repeats until Bob comes back. There is also the last season of The Mindy Project to schedule, but ignored on press release so maybe they dropped it?

Bob's Burgers usually airs Sunday at 7:30pm (only on weeks when FOX is not airing NFL overruns), so not sure how that would impact what is on at 8:00pm. My guess is that City will fill the gap with reruns of their CanCom sitcoms. They could use that slot for The Mindy Project, but all indications are that it may have been dropped. It's not listed among the shows returning to City on their website. The first five seasons of The Mindy Project is available for streaming on Netflix Canada, so it's possible they may have acquired the Canadian rights for the sixth and final season.

It's possible FOX has told City they intend to schedule The Resident Monday night's midseason. As for The Bachelor, it's been on Omni for the past 2 or 3 years at least. Only Bachelorette and Paradise are on City. But that can change this year of course and it can be a mistake also of course.

City has picked up the weekday strip syndication rights for Black-ish. It replaces Celebrity Name Game which has been cancelled after three seasons.

Outside of Toronto, CityNews is replaced with reruns of Murdoch Mysteries, although that is expected to change with Rogers' announcement to expand CityNews across all markets except for Saskatchewan.

The Master Planners list Bob's Burgers on Sunday nights at 7:30pm for both fall and midseason. Also rounding out the Sunday schedule are reruns of cancelled CanCon sitcom Sunnyside at 7:00pm and old episodes of Family Guy at 8:00pm.

City Announces 2018 Mid-Season Schedule

TORONTO (December 7, 2017) The seatbelt sign is on and the doctor is in. Whether it’s high-flying hijinks and fantasy suites or medical malpractice and more Mindy you’re after, City is serving up the most laughs and gasps this winter with its must-see 2018 mid-season schedule, beginning Monday, Jan. 1.

Joining the City schedule are the season’s most-buzzed-about new medical drama, The Resident, and high-larious new comedy, LA to Vegas. Returning favourites include the sixth and final season of beloved comedy, The Mindy Project, a brand-new search for love on Season 22 of The Bachelor, featuring former fan-favourite contestant Arie Luyendyk Jr., and The 60TH Annual GRAMMY Awards® , with returning host James Corden ( The Late Late Show with James Corden).

... and, Rogers is back to "let it be" scheduling strategy.

- Mindy Project ran for 10 episodes, 5 weeks, thursdays 8pm to 9pm. TV listings for last thursday still had Mindy there, repeating episodes 1 and 2, up until someone woke up I think wednesday night and changed this for random Modern Family reruns (yup, 2 hours of MF !).

With the Olympics, many shows are reruns of off the schedule.
- This monday, no Scorpion on CBS, Fox has a rerun of The Resident (ep1), and ABC's Bachelor is all-new. Instead of moving Bachelor in simsub, City left it in pre-release at 7pm, kept Resident in simsub at 9pm, and filled the 10pm slot with Mom reruns.
- ABC also have "Bachelor Winter Games" tuesdays and thursdays. Either City decided to ignore it, or they're too busy with Fox's tuesday lineup of reruns and CBS's 9pm sitcoms that aren't there ?
- Fox has a Resident rerun (ep 2) wednesday 8pm, Citytv decided to ignore it, Modern Family marathon instead (I think Citytv's obssession with MF surpasses CTV's obsession with TBBT this week).
