    Imagine More – More New, More Favourites, More Choice. Citytv Unveils 11 New Shows for 2018/19 Prime-Time Schedule

    – Citytv brings drama to the 10 p.m. slot with A Million Little Things and Manifest
    – Citytv adds hottest reboots Murphy Brown and The Twilight Zone to its lineup –
    – Bart and Homer are heading to Citytv, with the addition of The Simpsons on Sundays –
    – Citytv’s #1 hit reality and awards shows, America’s Got Talent and the GRAMMYs® , return with multi-year deals, alongside 16 powerhouse renewals for the 2018/19 season –

    TORONTO (June 5, 2018) – Imagine a prime-time schedule packed with more programming that stirs excitement and captures the hearts of Canadian TV lovers. Today Rogers Media unveils Citytv’s 2018/19 schedule, anchored by last season’s proven hits and strengthened by highly-anticipated buzzy new shows. Rick Brace, President of Rogers Media, Colette Watson, Senior Vice President of Television & Broadcast Operations, together with the executive team, will present Citytv’s new Fall and midseason schedules to advertisers and media this afternoon at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall.

    The new Citytv schedule boasts 11 new shows, the return of 16 fan favourites, 3 live events and specials, and underscores a renewed investment in the 10 p.m. timeslot with two nights of compelling new dramas. While Hockey Night in Canada reigns supreme on Saturday nights, viewers will discover exciting new shows every other night of the week during the 2018/19 season.
    “Canadians love TV. Last year, more than 30 million Canadians watched television every week, and they currently spend nearly 10x more time watching TV than they do browsing social platforms – that’s because TV delivers an experience unmatched by any other entertainment medium,” said Brace. “TV is the place where Canadians come for an immersive and emotional connection to characters and stories, and where advertisers have the greatest reach and impact. That’s the power of television.”

    “We have created the strongest schedule in Citytv’s history, delivering more of what viewers want,” added Watson. “We know viewers tune in for family and friendship, to see trailblazing women who spark greatness, action and intrigue with unpredictable plot twists, and stories of everyday people who make us laugh, cry, and capture our imagination. Our 2018/19 season delivers a dynamic mix of comedy, drama and reality series, and the result is a pure entertainment schedule that reflects our Citytv brand.”

    Stories with Heart
    :

    Whether bonded by blood or by choice, the power of family and friendship runs deep through Citytv’s 2018/19 lineup, with dramas and live-event programming that explore these complicated, messy, and tender relationships with the people who – for better or worse – matter the most. Rocked by the sudden loss of one of their own, Boston friends support each other through love, loss, and life in A Million Little Things – the fall season’s most anticipated breakout hit drama. New drama Manifest explores the unsettling lives of the long-missing passengers and crew of Montego Air Flight 828 as they try to understand what happened to them – and what they’re meant to do with second chances. Parenthood is tough – and family life in the Marvel Universe is no exception when mom and dad discover their kids have mutant super powers in the new-to-Citytv family adventure The Gifted. And renegades with retro style are coming to Citytv this Fall, as the code-cracking crime-solving Bletchley women take their formidable skills stateside to tackle new mysteries in the Citytv originalThe Bletchley Circle: San Francisco.

    Lighten Up:
    Life is tough, take a break and laugh-it-out with another season of celebrated Citytv comedies! In one of the most anticipated comedy reboots of the year, Murphy Brown returns to FYI News – two decades later – bringing her whip-smart newsroom skills and biting wit into today’s era of ‘fake news’, 24/7 cable news cycles, and social media. Thirty years in, The Simpsons is still making audiences laugh-out-loud with their irreverent take on the world today. Bart, Homer, Marge and the gang are bringing their outrageous antics to Citytv this Fall. Single Parents finds the funny in navigating parenthood alone…except for those well-meaning, nosy, pushy fellow single parent friends determined to ‘help’. If you ever wondered what became of those rowdy kids at the back of the class, The Cool Kids are wreaking havoc in their retirement community – because growing old with dignity is for chumps! And in new comedy Rel, Rel becomes a single, long-distance dad after discovering his wife’s affair – with his own barber – and he’s not sure which loss is the bigger blow.

    A Dose of ‘Reality’ :
    A new perspective can change the world. This season, Citytv brings audiences stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, people transformed by events and inspired to do more and be more. In midseason, a contemporary take on a dramatic sci-fi classic, The Twilight Zone returns, reimagined with metaphorical stories for a modern era by Get Out director Jordan Peele. From reality TV heavyweights Mark Burnett and Mike Darnell, Citytv celebrates incredible talent in The World’s Best – a global competition show with a twist.

    Fan Favourites:

    Proven hits and fan favourites return as Citytv confirms the renewal of 16 prime-time series, delivering more laugh-out-loud moments, dramatic plot twists, and thrilling competition through the 2018/19 season. Returning series are Citytv’s #1 show America’s Got Talent, his-and-hers The Bachelor / The Bachelorette franchise,Canadian mob thriller and Citytv original Bad Blood, Black-ish, Bob’s Burgers, fan favourite Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Dancing with the Stars, Family Guy, Hell’s Kitchen, Hockey Night in Canada, Lethal Weapon, Life in Pieces, Modern Family, Mom, and last year’s breakout comedy hit The Orville .

    The iconic New Year’s Eve countdown celebrationDick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards® also return to Citytv this season. Then in 2019, an all-new live musical production of the Tony Award-, Grammy Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent brings the unforgettable story of friendship, love, and hope among seven struggling artists in New York’s gritty East Village to a whole new audience.

    All programming is available on Citytv.com and on mobile through the City Video app for iOS and Android, and on all Citytv+ digital platforms launching this Fall. Premiere dates will be announced soon; shows not listed on the Fall schedule below will be announced at a later date.

    Fridays at 8 p.m.
    Meet the original women who code. The first Bletchley Circle series followed a group of four female codebreakers at the elite Second World War code-breaking centre Bletchley Park, who used their skills to investigate a series of complex crimes. This new season picks up three years later in 1956, as Jean and Millie depart London for San Francisco to investigate the murder of a close friend. They are joined there by North American code-breakers Iris and Hailey who, like their British counterparts, find themselves undervalued and overlooked despite their indispensable war efforts. THE COOL KIDS
    30-minute scripted comedy series
    Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m.
    This rag-tag group of friends living in a retirement community break every rule to have fun – at their age, what do they have to lose? Hank is the leader of this motley crew, a gruff, opinionated, 21st century Archie Bunker who will go to great lengths to have a good time. His loyal (but less than helpful) friends include Charlie, a bumbling storyteller who goes on frequent tangents about some bizarre, barely believable episode from his life; and Sid, a naysaying, pill-popping hypochondriac who shoots down every scheme…but still gets roped in. Margaret, a brash and confident woman, complicates matters by forcing her way into their group and refusing to leave (she doesn’t take crap from anyone – especially not these three!). They are united by their shared belief that they’re not done living yet – not by a long shot.

Seeing their life in fast-forward, they discover that their friends, families and colleagues had mourned their loss – and then moved on. With a second chance, their new realities become clear, and a deeper mystery unfolds as some of the returned passengers discover they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible.

    MURPHY BROWN
    30-minute scripted comedy series
    Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.
    She’s back! In a world of 24-hour cable, social media, ‘fake news’, and a vastly different political climate, the world needs Murphy Brown more than ever! The revival of the ground-breaking comedy about the eponymous broadcast news legend and her biting take on current events returns amid a divided America, chaotic discourse, and rampant attacks on the press. Murphy is back with her original FYI team: lifestyle reporter Corky Sherwood, investigative journalist Frank Fontana, and producer Miles Silverberg. Murphy’s son, Avery, shares his mother’s competitive spirit and quick wit, and has followed in her journalistic footsteps – perhaps too closely. Now back in the game, Murphy is determined to draw the line between ratings-grabbing headlines and honest reporting.

It’s the worst, because as hard it is to find a good spouse, it’s even harder to find a reliable barber. Plus, the barbershop is the epicenter of neighbourhood gossip, so his marital business is known by everyone. Rel’s tough-talking, no-B.S. best friend, Brittany; his recently out-of-jail younger brother, Nat; and Rel’s Dad all pitch in to lend support – whether he wants it or not. After his kids move to Cleveland with their mom, Rel begins rebuilding his life as a long-distance dad and dips his toe in the dating pool. Ever the optimist, Rel continues his search for love, respect...and a new barber.

This single dad has been so focused on raising his daughter that he’s lost sight of who he is as a man – but there’s help! Friends, colleagues, and neighbours – featuring some of the notable actors from stage and screen – round out The Simpsons experience.

    The get The Simpsons and The gifted...Chicago Med and Chicago Fire nowhere to be found...Did CTV picked them up? Are they that unpopular that nobody did? Also The Blacklist is gone...Did it also go to CTV or did nobody picked it up as well??

    Great news for Twilight Zone, I expected this to be on CBS All Access.

    According to their Master Planner, probably subject to change, but right now they have The Orville at 8pm and Twilight Zone at 10pm on Thursdays.

    - The Cool Kids -> City
    - Rel -> City
    The CW

    Something weird, City picked Fox's "Cool Kids" (fridays 8:30pm on Fox), but City airs it in pre-release wednesdays, opting for a Canadian original at 8pm. They also got rid of ABC's Speechless (fri 8:30pm), which went to CHCH, which passed on Fox's Last Man Standing revival in order to simsub Fresh off the Boat... Bell Media's next press release should help putting the pieces together.

    Damnit Corus ! Well, this keeps the episodes from being available the next day on Netflix, but on the positive side, Bell Media didn't pick them, resulting in them being exclusive to CraveTV. (In other words, I can find S1 & S2 of Supergirl on Neflix, but not The Flash, Arrow, Legends, etc.)
    We had a good run: 2006 to 2020. Thanks for the informations and debates.

    Has City dropped this show, I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the fall preview info that was released today?!

    It doesn't debut until January 2019 but they mentioned 2 other mid-season shows (brooklyn nine-nine & Life in Pieces).

    - The Kids Are Alright -> CTV

    - Single Parents -> City
    - A Million Little Things -> City
    CBS
    - The Neighborhood -> Global
    - Happy Together - Global
    - Magnum, P.I. -> CTV
    - FBI -> Global
    - Murphy Brown -> City
    - God Friended Me -> CTV
    NBC
    - Manifest -> City
    - New Amsterdam -> Global
    - I Feel Bad -> Global
    Fox
    - Last Man Standing -> no canadian broadcaster !
    - The Cool Kids -> City
    - Rel -> City
    The CW
    - All American -> W
    - Legacies -> Showcase
    - Charmed -> W

    If past seasons are any indication, I don't think we should be expecting any big surprises beyond what we already know.

    CTV already released their full list of acquisitions ahead of their upfronts on Thursday. As it stands so far, they lost The Gifted to City in exchange for The Resident.

    Among the fall shows, three of them should find a spot on CTV in simulcast (Magnum, P.I., The Rookie and God Friended Me). Only one show, being a sitcom, The Kids Are Alright will likely end up on CTV Two just so it can be simulcast with ABC.

    Everything else picked up will arrive midseason (Whiskey Cavalier, Grand Hotel, The Fix, The Red Line, The Village, The Enemy Within, America's Got Talent: The Champions).

    That being said, we should not expect anything new for CTV Two. It is highly unlikely that they got the rights for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire which have been dropped by Global. Aside from The Voice and two nights of NFL Football, I think their schedule will consist of more fillers. Besides, if those shows got picked up, it would have been mentioned in last week's press release.

    Other observations:

    CW shows airing on Canadian broadcasters: Anyone notice a trend here? For this fall, almost all of The CW shows are being transferred exclusively to specialty channels and/or streaming services like Netflix. DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow are among the latest to join the list, joining Supernatural, Supergirl and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend among the established veterans. Newcomers including All American and Charmed will be premiering on W while Legacies will be airing on Showcase. The rest of the lineup including Black Lightning, Riverdale and Dynasty are on Netflix. That leaves The Flash as the only show whose status is yet to be determined. At this rate, it would not come as a surprise if that show also gets moved to specialty and/or streaming with a potential second run window on a Canadian broadcast network down the road.
    Global is already doing this with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airing the latest season overnight on Sundays at 1:00am.

    Established shows being dropped from Canadian broadcasters: We've seen this happen before. 90210 was dropped from Global and moved to Netflix for its final seasons. Scandal was dropped from City and got picked up by Netflix. Though it's being held for midseason, The Blacklist went from Global where it aired for four seasons to City, and now that show's been dropped. Considering that Netflix already has the rights to previous seasons, it would not surprise me if they obtain the rights for next season.

    As for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire, I can see why Global chose to drop the rights to those shows. Both were time-shifted for the most part last season and did not deliver the ratings they would have hoped. Chicago Med aired often in pre-release on Mondays, as it got blocked by NCIS: New Orleans on Tuesdays and Chicago Fire wound up airing on Fridays, because it conflicted with S.W.A.T. on Thursdays. Considering the output deal that Global with CBS Studios, it seems that they were better off keeping most of the CBS shows (which performed better for the most part) and were willing to let go of some of the Universal properties. Since there was no mention of those two shows on Corus' specialty channels, then the only possibilities I can think of at this point are Netflix or maybe Rogers' new Citytv NOW service, but more likely the former.

    Last Man Standing aired on City for the first three seasons then on CHCH for the next three. Since then, reruns of the show have been airing on CMT, so perhaps very quietly with little announcement, Corus will acquire the rights and episodes from the next season will turn up there. Or like all the other shows without a Canadian broadcaster, they will turn up on Netflix, which also has the rights to previous seasons.

    So far in this upfront season, it seems that the Canadian broadcasters were willing to take more risks in acquiring new shows and air them in simulcast (of course, it's only a matter of time whether they sink or swim) and in doing so, trade off the rights to established and proven shows, which become an asset for streaming services like Netflix.

    As for Daytime, ABC decided 3 weeks ago to cancel afternoon show The Chew and replace it with a 3rd hour of Good Morning America, which was a bad decision since GMA hours can't be syndicated and sold to Canada...

    Anyways, how will Rogers fill the void? One more Murdoch rerun? A new syndicated ABC sitcom? (like "black-ish")

    I'm looking for the replacement to be Canada's version of The Chew ... The Choke.

    The Choke will visit the Big Smoke ... Toronto Ontario, for its pilot episode. Pot Brownies will be served to special guest: Don Cherry (cherries are tart, not smart).

    And if we're still not cancelled, episode 2 will feature Hogtown ... Toronto Ontario. Doug Ford will join us at the table for a delicious meal of porky pig ... That's all Folks !!!
    Warning: I'm not playing with a full deck.

    With another syndicated show. Rogers Media has quietly acquired DailyMail TV, another one of those newsmagazine / tabloid shows (like Inside Edition), which will be replacing The Chew in its current timeslot. DailyMail TV debuted last fall, but this marks the first time that it will be airing on a Canadian network.

    City stations have also been airing similar syndicated series including Crime Watch Daily hosted by Chris Hansen (formerly of Dateline NBC) and Top 30 (promoted as 30 stories in 30 minutes) which they have buried overnights at 2:30am, lost in between reruns of their cancelled CanCon original sitcoms and specialty fare from OLN.

    Small detail, but it looks like back in june, Rogers decided to revert back the "Citytv" brand name, re-adding the "tv" bit they suppressed a few years ago.
    It's noticeable when comparing the 1st message of this thread and last season's primetime schedule announcement, but also the on-air announcer for fall shows.

    Looks like Citytv will be stuck with the 4 networks at the same time on thursdays this winter.
    - CBS keeps Mom at 9pm (no broadcaster for Fam at 9:30pm)
    - NBC scheduled the return of Brooklyn 99 at 9pm, but we already know after Good Place finale, Will & Grace takes its slot, both shows are on Global.
    - ABC "upgraded" A Million Little Things to thursdays 9pm.
    - Fox's The Orville is also scheduled for thursdays 9pm.

    It makes sense to schedule both sitcoms in pre-release at 8/8:30pm eventho it's against TBBT/YS, Orville at 9pm and the more adult-themed AMLT in post at 10pm.

    Though Citytv has yet to announce its midseason plans, this is what I think it will look like:

    Monday: The Bachelor (ABC), Manifest (until late Februrary). Given the rights they have to most FOX shows, they might have picked up The Passage. Of course, that would mean either airing it in pre-release at 7:00pm or pushing The Bachelor up an hour early, like last season when they had the rights to The Resident.

    Tuesday: Lethal Weapon and The Gifted (both FOX shows), which swapped timeslots.

    Wednesday: Presumably the same lineup as they did in the fall with Black-ish (post-release), The Cool Kids (pre-release), Modern Family and Single Parents. Starting in February, CBS will be airing new reality competition series The World's Best on the evening so that would push one hour of the sitcom block to another night.

    Thursday: As mentioned at the top of the post, I agree that it would make more sense to have Mom and Brooklyn Nine-Nine air in pre-release, followed by The Orville in simulcast and A Million Little Things in post-release.

    Friday: With the mini-series The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco having concluded, it will probably be filler in the 8:00pm timeslot until February, when they could schedule both Black-ish and The Cool Kids, the latter of which would air in simulcast. Hell's Kitchen finishes its current season in mid-February, and FOX will replace it with Proven Innocent, a new midsesason drama - perhaps another possible pickup for Citytv.

    Sunday: They hold the rights to the entire FOX lineup, so nothing is expected to change until March, when Rel goes off the schedule, Bob's Burgers moves to 7:30pm and Family Guy is at 8:30pm.

    Citytv also carries the Canadian rights to the revival of The Twilight Zone (streaming on CBS All Access), so it will probably turn up a little earlier in the year once room becomes available.

    According to Zap2It, looks like Citytv will keep A Million Little Things in its fall slot wednesdays at 10pm, in pre-release... Unless someone at Rogers is still sleeping on the switch, which ain't something new...

    And that unknown person at Rogers did, indeed! Yup, my Over-the-Air PVR automatically programmed AMLT yesterday (wed) at 10pm, so be it. Then this morning during BT Mtl, there was a AMLT promo with the announcer saying "tonight at 10pm". Darn, I thought they probably rolled the tape by filename confusion. Then I just verified what my PVR caught yesterday night, and it's 2x Mom reruns. soooo, guess they finally opted to air AMLT on thursdays at 10pm.

    Or maybe they pulled the typical "we fixed TV Schedule for City Toronto 2 weeks ago, we forgot about our other stations".

    Small detail, but, last sunday during the AFC Championship on CBS, Fox scheduled a "Cool Kids" rerun at 9:30pm, now that "Rel" is over. The same thing will happen on Super Bowl night 2 weeks later, but Citytv opted for a Modern Family rerun on both occasions, losing a simsub opportunity. One can argue advertisers will pay more for a Family rerun than Kids, but in reality, Citytv's friday 8pm slot is currently wide open, with a Bletchley cancon filler. They never tried once a simsub opportunity with that show.

    As mentioned in another thread, Citytv has the canadian broadcast rights to CBS' SuperBowl post-show, The World's Best, meaning this year, Rogers will be the one waiting eternally for the post-game show to wrap-up with a filler show until they cut abruptly to simsub CBS' game show... while CTV can exit early, dumping the SB post-game show to TSN and press Play on whatever they will program there.

    Speaking of World's Best, CBS programmed it wednesdays 8pm for Feb 6 & 13, then at 9pm starting Feb 20. What's airing wed at 9pm on Citytv? Their precious, untoucheable Modern Family flagship show. Expect World's Best to air in post-release at 10pm. Huh, come to think about it, must be the reason why they decided last-minute to bump Million Little Things to thursdays 10pm...

    So The Twighlight Zone starts April 4th with a 2 hours premiere at 9pm.

    Originally, The Orville was supposed to be a repeat but FOX changed their minds and now it is a new episodes. So now will be pre-Fox for that week.
    I assume the regular schedule for Twilight Zone is at 10pm.
