TORONTO (June 5, 2018) – Imagine a prime-time schedule packed with more programming that stirs excitement and captures the hearts of Canadian TV lovers. Today Rogers Media unveils Citytv’s 2018/19 schedule, anchored by last season’s proven hits and strengthened by highly-anticipated buzzy new shows. Rick Brace, President of Rogers Media, Colette Watson, Senior Vice President of Television & Broadcast Operations, together with the executive team, will present Citytv’s new Fall and midseason schedules to advertisers and media this afternoon at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall.

The new Citytv schedule boasts 11 new shows, the return of 16 fan favourites, 3 live events and specials, and underscores a renewed investment in the 10 p.m. timeslot with two nights of compelling new dramas. While Hockey Night in Canada reigns supreme on Saturday nights, viewers will discover exciting new shows every other night of the week during the 2018/19 season.

Great news for Twilight Zone, I expected this to be on CBS All Access.

If past seasons are any indication, I don't think we should be expecting any big surprises beyond what we already know.

CTV already released their full list of acquisitions ahead of their upfronts on Thursday. As it stands so far, they lost The Gifted to City in exchange for The Resident.

Among the fall shows, three of them should find a spot on CTV in simulcast (Magnum, P.I., The Rookie and God Friended Me). Only one show, being a sitcom, The Kids Are Alright will likely end up on CTV Two just so it can be simulcast with ABC.

Everything else picked up will arrive midseason (Whiskey Cavalier, Grand Hotel, The Fix, The Red Line, The Village, The Enemy Within, America's Got Talent: The Champions).

That being said, we should not expect anything new for CTV Two. It is highly unlikely that they got the rights for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire which have been dropped by Global. Aside from The Voice and two nights of NFL Football, I think their schedule will consist of more fillers. Besides, if those shows got picked up, it would have been mentioned in last week's press release.


Other observations:

CW shows airing on Canadian broadcasters: Anyone notice a trend here? For this fall, almost all of The CW shows are being transferred exclusively to specialty channels and/or streaming services like Netflix. DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow are among the latest to join the list, joining Supernatural, Supergirl and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend among the established veterans. Newcomers including All American and Charmed will be premiering on W while Legacies will be airing on Showcase. The rest of the lineup including Black Lightning, Riverdale and Dynasty are on Netflix. That leaves The Flash as the only show whose status is yet to be determined. At this rate, it would not come as a surprise if that show also gets moved to specialty and/or streaming with a potential second run window on a Canadian broadcast network down the road.
Global is already doing this with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airing the latest season overnight on Sundays at 1:00am.

Established shows being dropped from Canadian broadcasters: We've seen this happen before. 90210 was dropped from Global and moved to Netflix for its final seasons. Scandal was dropped from City and got picked up by Netflix. Though it's being held for midseason, The Blacklist went from Global where it aired for four seasons to City, and now that show's been dropped. Considering that Netflix already has the rights to previous seasons, it would not surprise me if they obtain the rights for next season.

As for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire, I can see why Global chose to drop the rights to those shows. Both were time-shifted for the most part last season and did not deliver the ratings they would have hoped. Chicago Med aired often in pre-release on Mondays, as it got blocked by NCIS: New Orleans on Tuesdays and Chicago Fire wound up airing on Fridays, because it conflicted with S.W.A.T. on Thursdays. Considering the output deal that Global with CBS Studios, it seems that they were better off keeping most of the CBS shows (which performed better for the most part) and were willing to let go of some of the Universal properties. Since there was no mention of those two shows on Corus' specialty channels, then the only possibilities I can think of at this point are Netflix or maybe Rogers' new Citytv NOW service, but more likely the former.

Last Man Standing aired on City for the first three seasons then on CHCH for the next three. Since then, reruns of the show have been airing on CMT, so perhaps very quietly with little announcement, Corus will acquire the rights and episodes from the next season will turn up there. Or like all the other shows without a Canadian broadcaster, they will turn up on Netflix, which also has the rights to previous seasons.

So far in this upfront season, it seems that the Canadian broadcasters were willing to take more risks in acquiring new shows and air them in simulcast (of course, it's only a matter of time whether they sink or swim) and in doing so, trade off the rights to established and proven shows, which become an asset for streaming services like Netflix.

With another syndicated show. Rogers Media has quietly acquired DailyMail TV, another one of those newsmagazine / tabloid shows (like Inside Edition), which will be replacing The Chew in its current timeslot. DailyMail TV debuted last fall, but this marks the first time that it will be airing on a Canadian network.

City stations have also been airing similar syndicated series including Crime Watch Daily hosted by Chris Hansen (formerly of Dateline NBC) and Top 30 (promoted as 30 stories in 30 minutes) which they have buried overnights at 2:30am, lost in between reruns of their cancelled CanCon original sitcoms and specialty fare from OLN.

Small detail, but it looks like back in june, Rogers decided to revert back the "Citytv" brand name, re-adding the "tv" bit they suppressed a few years ago.
It's noticeable when comparing the 1st message of this thread and last season's primetime schedule announcement, but also the on-air announcer for fall shows.

- CBS keeps Mom at 9pm (no broadcaster for Fam at 9:30pm)
- NBC scheduled the return of Brooklyn 99 at 9pm, but we already know after Good Place finale, Will & Grace takes its slot, both shows are on Global.
- ABC "upgraded" A Million Little Things to thursdays 9pm.
- Fox's The Orville is also scheduled for thursdays 9pm.

It makes sense to schedule both sitcoms in pre-release at 8/8:30pm eventho it's against TBBT/YS, Orville at 9pm and the more adult-themed AMLT in post at 10pm.

Though Citytv has yet to announce its midseason plans, this is what I think it will look like:

Monday: The Bachelor (ABC), Manifest (until late Februrary). Given the rights they have to most FOX shows, they might have picked up The Passage. Of course, that would mean either airing it in pre-release at 7:00pm or pushing The Bachelor up an hour early, like last season when they had the rights to The Resident.

Tuesday: Lethal Weapon and The Gifted (both FOX shows), which swapped timeslots.

Wednesday: Presumably the same lineup as they did in the fall with Black-ish (post-release), The Cool Kids (pre-release), Modern Family and Single Parents. Starting in February, CBS will be airing new reality competition series The World's Best on the evening so that would push one hour of the sitcom block to another night.

Thursday: As mentioned at the top of the post, I agree that it would make more sense to have Mom and Brooklyn Nine-Nine air in pre-release, followed by The Orville in simulcast and A Million Little Things in post-release.

Friday: With the mini-series The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco having concluded, it will probably be filler in the 8:00pm timeslot until February, when they could schedule both Black-ish and The Cool Kids, the latter of which would air in simulcast. Hell's Kitchen finishes its current season in mid-February, and FOX will replace it with Proven Innocent, a new midsesason drama - perhaps another possible pickup for Citytv.

Sunday: They hold the rights to the entire FOX lineup, so nothing is expected to change until March, when Rel goes off the schedule, Bob's Burgers moves to 7:30pm and Family Guy is at 8:30pm.

Citytv also carries the Canadian rights to the revival of The Twilight Zone (streaming on CBS All Access), so it will probably turn up a little earlier in the year once room becomes available.

And that unknown person at Rogers did, indeed! Yup, my Over-the-Air PVR automatically programmed AMLT yesterday (wed) at 10pm, so be it. Then this morning during BT Mtl, there was a AMLT promo with the announcer saying "tonight at 10pm". Darn, I thought they probably rolled the tape by filename confusion. Then I just verified what my PVR caught yesterday night, and it's 2x Mom reruns. soooo, guess they finally opted to air AMLT on thursdays at 10pm.

Or maybe they pulled the typical "we fixed TV Schedule for City Toronto 2 weeks ago, we forgot about our other stations".

Small detail, but, last sunday during the AFC Championship on CBS, Fox scheduled a "Cool Kids" rerun at 9:30pm, now that "Rel" is over. The same thing will happen on Super Bowl night 2 weeks later, but Citytv opted for a Modern Family rerun on both occasions, losing a simsub opportunity. One can argue advertisers will pay more for a Family rerun than Kids, but in reality, Citytv's friday 8pm slot is currently wide open, with a Bletchley cancon filler. They never tried once a simsub opportunity with that show.

As mentioned in another thread, Citytv has the canadian broadcast rights to CBS' SuperBowl post-show, The World's Best, meaning this year, Rogers will be the one waiting eternally for the post-game show to wrap-up with a filler show until they cut abruptly to simsub CBS' game show... while CTV can exit early, dumping the SB post-game show to TSN and press Play on whatever they will program there.

Speaking of World's Best, CBS programmed it wednesdays 8pm for Feb 6 & 13, then at 9pm starting Feb 20. What's airing wed at 9pm on Citytv? Their precious, untoucheable Modern Family flagship show. Expect World's Best to air in post-release at 10pm. Huh, come to think about it, must be the reason why they decided last-minute to bump Million Little Things to thursdays 10pm...

So The Twighlight Zone starts April 4th with a 2 hours premiere at 9pm.

Originally, The Orville was supposed to be a repeat but FOX changed their minds and now it is a new episodes. So now will be pre-Fox for that week.
I assume the regular schedule for Twilight Zone is at 10pm.
