Big 10 Network will also feature up to 5 additional SD channels for alternate games. I don't believe HD versions of the alternate feeds will be offered.

Someone was telling me that there is demand for those channels. Really?

It's probably because they come at a high premium cost which they

can pass down to their customers who apparently are "demanding" these kind of channels. Only

reason I can see they are offering more Adult channels.

So not enough room to carry small market local stations and channels like BBC Kids, but plently of room for porn

As was already mentioned, these channels are premium services that cost in excess of $10 a month to subscribe to therefore that translates into big bucks for BDU's. Who cares about some lowly small market local, how much revenue are they going to make off those channels- nothing, that is all these guys care about.

It seems you like to conveniently ignore the important facts and and instead just focus on the things that suit your purpose. BDU's are in business to make money not please people, unless its mandated by the CRTC they won't carry it unless they can make money off it Like it or not (personally I detest it), Porn is a money maker that is why cable and satellite carry so many channels.

Why then do these BDU's lie and say it's because of capacity issues that they can't carry small market conventional stations?

Why do they lie when they say they are all about consumer choice, when really they can pull channels or not carry some channels as they see fit?

I understand it's business, but I would appreciate it if the BDU's just came out and said what you said instead of deciding we're all idiots.

Probably not. Shaw HATES everything gay and lesbian... and AOV Maleflixx exists...

For years, Shaw refused to carry Cat 1 digital PrideVision. Nowadays, they classified OutTV (no nudity) as a standalone adult premium offered only by calling the customer service directly and asking for it.

By the way, it's a good move. They are replacing an underused PAY-PER-VIEW channel by a channel a customer can actually subscribe to and watch 24/7, and you guys are still complaining...

For what its worth, they eliminated another channel in order to add this service so the capacity issue may not actually be a lie.

Probably because they don't care about us (consumers), except when they want to take our money ;) These guys seem to operate like some sort of cartel, like OPEC. Why is there no competition between cable and satellite, the prices and packaging seem pretty much the same to me?! They all pretty much offer the same channels (except for Shaw) yet I see no real push to attract customers, like you have with say cell phones. Something has to change here, not sure if regulation is the answer or what but there has to be a way to force these guys to compete which would then (I hope) bring about better offerings in terms of prices and packaging options. Cable and satellite are both grossly overpriced and consumers have no recourse- you either subscribe and pay through the nose or say NO and end up with out any TV service.

I think a lot of people forget that Shaw is an SRDU. They are the primary provider for most specialty channels and PPV services for many cable companies. This is one of the main reaasons why small market local channels are secondary for them.

From what I've been reading porn is losing money big time, producers are dropping like crazy. The issue, online tube sites make it easy to access thousands of hours worth of porn for free using a web browser.

I know with the PPV stuff the deal is usually 50/50 or better for the cable company. I remember when I first signed up with ExpressVu it was something like $5.95 for a PPV porn, these days the price is $12+ I think. Sorry, but I really cannot see why someone would pay that for something readily available online free. And the money certainly doesn't go to support the actors involved, they get paid once for their "work".

Word in the industry though is that actors who once worked 5 days a week are now lucky to get 3 days a month, the bottom has fallen out of the industry as the free stuff available means less buyers for the paid stuff. DVD sales have especially been hit hard apparently.

And weren't the numbers for the monthly channels in the low thousands when it comes to subscriber numbers? Really, why would anyone need/want 24/7 porn channels. Heck I gave Playboy TV a shot for a month or two and dropped it quick as it never got watched anyway. :)

Shaw is a horrible TV provider. Before you know it, Shaw will remove so many local TV stations we can't comprehend it. Shaw both runs Cable and now Satellite so. Either stick with one or the other. There should just be Shaw Satellite instead of cable.
Canada lacks in HD. If you agree post this in your signature.

CANADA NEEDS HD. We have nothing!

Really, so why then do we have all these 'adult' channels on the dial if they are not making as much money as before?! Who exactly is subscribing to these channels then if you can find this stuff online for free?!

That is a good question, I think partially it is because some of the channels we have in Canada are indeed Canadian channels so that counts towards quotas, there is quite a bit of Cancon content produced. Keep in mind that getting the product isn't too costly considering how much it costs to produce, there aren't royalties or anything going to the "talent" in these productions.

But someone posted the numbers for some of the channels here before and the subscriber numbers were not good. There is a small audience for this stuff and likely the BDU makes more from the 24/7 dedicated channel than PPV services offering one movie for almost the price of subscribing to the dedicated channel.

Obviously the audience isn't zero yet but with the easy access to the free stuff online that audience is getting smaller, why pay for something readily available for free online? The producers were whining about much of their product ending up pirated and put on the tube sites for free, which is true, although with the advancements in home consumer technology even if it wasn't their stuff you'd see enough amateur content to drown out the professional stuff. Lets face it, anyone can produce this stuff.

When these services come available they should be on HDTV basic package as their SD sister channels are are basic services as well, so it only makes sense.

    MuchHD
    YTV HD
    CBC Newsworld HD

Given these channels are not launched yet or have given any indication whether they will launch at all! However, I am just saying why should these services be on a extended HD tier?

CBC Newsworld HD has launched, Shaw Direct just hasn't added it yet.

Always. There is a contract dispute over carriage and rates or customer demand, etc.
