CW picks up 'Nikita,' 'Hellcats,' 'Life,' 'OTH'

The CW has renewed both its bubble shows -- "Life Unexpected" and "One Tree Hill" -- while picking up two new series for next season, "Hellcats" and "Nikita."

"Nikita" will give the network its first non-supernatural action-drama. The Warner Bros/Wonderland series stars martial arts expert Maggie Q as an assassin who goes rogue. "Hellcats" is about a college cheerleading squad at a Southern university, and is from Bonanza/Warner Bros./CBS TV.

Though rumors had started last week that both veteran soap "OTH" and critically well-liked freshman drama "Unexpected" might get another round, the move is still a bit surprising, particularly in the case of "Unexpected," which has garnered modest ratings. This will mark the eighth season for "OTH."

Problem with the CW in 2009-2010 season was the lack of mid-season replacements, so they ended up with a lot of reruns. About ratings, the CW should help themselves and get rid of the annoying animated snipes on the bottom 1/3 and the goddamn text around the network's logo. IMHo, that's a turn off. As much as I hate Global and CTV, I enjoyed watching 90210, Melrose and Vampire Diaries this year on the canadian networks, snipes-free.
We had a good run: 2006 to 2020. Thanks for the informations and debates.

"MELROSE" OUT, "PLAIN JANE" IN AT THE CW
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The CW has locked in its 2010-11 plans, which are set to be unveiled tomorrow.

Not among them are its "Melrose Place" revival, now dead after just 18 episodes.

On the flip side, reality entry "Plain Jane" has received a series commitment. The newcomer features British fashion expert Louise Roe as she gives - you guessed it - "plain janes" a makeover in time for their dates with long-time crushes.

Fly on the Wall Entertainment's Allison Grodner, Rich Meehan and Pete Tartaglia are behind the Sony Pictures Television-based project, which is set to roll out this summer.

The netlet has four other potential reality projects in the works - "Lost Weekend," "One Mass Dance," "Shed to Wed" and the untitled Tracy Anderson project - for next season.

This is probably going to be the strongest CW schedule yet. Both Hellcats and Nikita did very well, and if the rest of their shows maintain their last year numbers (albeit, Life Unexpected and 90210 should actually improve), they will have a pretty good year. Plug in Plain Jane during hiatus, or if "Life" or "Hill" doesn't get the back 9 ordered. They actually could go back to doing a Sunday night schedule, maybe just from 8-10.
