TV on DVD- The Lists: Sitcoms

For all fans of classic television, I have compiled a list of all the great shows from the 50s-90s and their availability on DVD. This I hope will become the definitive source for those who are interested in retro TV and want to be able to watch their favourites again. It is clear that no one is interested in creating a decent retro channel so our only recourse is to try and find our favourite shows online or via TV on DVD. So here is the first list, featuring all the great sitcoms from back in the day.

Third Rock from the Sun I belive is the original NBC Broadcast versions with the only difference being that they used the syndicated opening sequence.

That 70s Show does have some minor music edits, though I do not believe there is any disclaimer on any of the boxsets.

The Cosby Show Season 1 was originally released by First Look Entertainment and were indeed the sydnciated versions, however, the complete series boxset contains the uncut episodes.

You can get the non syndicated episodes of ALF from various European releases. Many of which have English tracks

The North American release of Roseanne, Season 1 is entirely syndicated episodes. I believe Season 6 or 7 onward, there are some episodes (most notably the closing credits) where musical scenes have been replaced with still generic credits. The majority of Season 2 onward are original broadcast versions. The Austrilian release of Roseanne, Season 1 featured the original broadcast version of episodes.

Most Cheers episodes are uncut, with only some episodes containing minor edits or scene omissions due to music copyright clearance. You can add Fraiser to the list of shows with music replacements. Some of the later seasons have this disclaimer. Nothing comes to mind that is different on the Frasier sets but the disclaimer does exist.

Thanks for the updates, I have added them to the list.

Regarding 3rd Rock from the Sun, from a review I read apparently only 30 seconds or so are missing from each episode (the opening sequence) but its still an edit which is why I am pointing it out.

The Cosby Show was originally released by Urban Works which was then bought out by First Look. I am not really impressed with their releases, the cover art is not consistent and of course the season 1 debacle which is actually Carsey-Werner's fault. Are these guys idiots or something- they charge a premium for these sets and they can't even give the fans the original broadcast versions of the episodes but instead release the edited versions?! This happened with Cosby Show, Roseanne, 3rd Rock from the Sun & A Different World. After huge outcry from the fans, season 2 and onward contain uncut episodes.

BTW, the complete series set for The Cosby Show is now out of print, not sure why but that is what I read?! I wish Universal had released these instead, they have released the show in Region 2 & 4 and from what I have seen they have done a better job.

I'm guessing the complete series of The Cosby Show is out of print because of the very poor package design.

The DVDs were stored in cardboard slips and what happened is the paint on the edge of the cardboard would leave a line on the DVDs. I bought this set 6x times and had the same result each time they came to me. Finally on the 6th set I used a lenz cloth and rubbing alcohol to clean the discs.

Does anyone know if full season (I think there were only 2 seasons) or a full series compilation set of DVDs were ever available for the early 1990s Fox sitcom Get A Life, that starred Chris Elliott? Several years ago I bought a couple of DVDs that had a few episodes each, then lent them to an acquaintance who lost them or gave them to someone else. I was reasonably sure I had heard or read somewhere that a more comprehensive set had been planned but held up due to unresolved legal issues.
And I've never seen reruns of it on any channel avaiable in Canada.

Unfortunately the only releases to date of this show are the two volume best-of DVD's that only contain 4 episodes each. These are now out of print, so if you want them you will have to find them through Amazon or some store that sells used DVD's.

A Season 1 release was rumored but according to the following info (this is from 2005), it was never released due to some legal issues. It looks like Sony owns the rights to this show which unfortunately is not a good thing because they seem to have stop releasing classic series on DVD. Your best bet is if some independent studio acquires the rights to release it- was this a fairly popular show, I've never heard of it?!

It was never a huge ratings hit, but I think it could have developed more of a cult type of following if it had been released on video soon after cancellation. It aired sporadically on Fox in different time slots. It was a little quirky and silly in its type of humour, maybe some would say more like a live-action cartoon. I recall one episode ending with the credits rolling as his neighbours kicked Elliott's severed head around like a soccer ball (this was still a few years before South Park killing Kenny in every episode). Some people liked it, while others, apparently including almost every woman who ever saw it, hated it or found it annoying and stupid.

    Nice list.

Any chance that one can be compiled for the 2000's?

Sorry, I am not really interested in shows from the 2000's and also I don't think they fit in the 'retro' category. If there is a particular show you are interested in then check out tvshowsondvd.com and do a search for that show and it will tell you if its available on DVD and what has been released.

FYI Married with Children had a November 30th release in Canada for some reason. MSRP was also much less for Canada - for once we get the long end of the media stick.

Retail price of $100 at Amazon.ca and HMV.

Watching it now - great set. Alt opening music for S3 onward and syndie versions for some seasons but for $100 for 11 seasons I'm not complaining.

I believe Season 4 of Married with Children contained the most syndicated cuts of episodes. You can however get the complete episodes from the German DVD release (less the original theme song).

Also I have reason to believe Boy Meets World - Season 4 is syndicated cuts. Almost all episodes run less then 22 minutes, which is too short IMO for 1996.

When they were charging $40 per season I was agog they'd use syndie versions but now that these less than $10/season series sets are finally arriving I'm alot more forgiving.

Also I was going through my collection and found a few sitcom sets not listed:

Lateline Complete series (Al Franken) - Paramount

Curb Your Enthusiasm (All seasons to date) - HBO

Buffalo Bill - complete series (Dabney Coleman) - Anchor Bay

Police Squad complete series (Leslie Neilson) - Paramount

What's Happening complete series (don't own it but sure I saw it when I was getting the Sanford and Son/Newsradio sets that are part of the same line) - Columbia
