Watching a show on Global experience

So, I PVR'ed the last 2 weeks of NCIS from Global HD 'coz I already have 3 shows on tuesday 8pm, and recorded NCIS from CBSHD yesterday. What a difference!

So at 8pm, CBS tells us what's on tonight (10 secs) airs NCIS where each commercial break is seperated by a black & white 2-secs segment and the strange sound. After the last segment, you see the executive producer names, then a 5-secs muted intro segment with a "stay tune for scenes from our next episode" voiceover, then commercials, then the studio names, then next week promos on top of readable closing credits in 16:9 format.

Watching NCIS on Global: The show is on, but for some reason, Global decides to modify the last segment and dramatically cut the last scene, makes you wonder if they screwed up and cut too early, makes you wanna scream GLOBAL SUCKS at your screen. They then play the abovementionned 5-secs intro segment without voiceover, then commercials, then the last scene, the executive producer names, the studio names, then the SAME generic promo for Shattered that you seen many times on the right, a squeezed unreadable closing credits screen on the right, and the bottom says "Next: Shattered" in a pathetic 4:3 screen.

So, why is Global mutilating NCIS?

Why are they adding product insertion/invasion at the bottom of the screen at around the 11th minute of the show? Commercials breaks exist for that reason!

How hard is it to put next week promo of the show you've just watched during closing credits?

How hard can it be to make a new promo for Shattered every week?

I don't get that pathetic network that is Global. I don't like nor enjoy watching shows on that network.

    Welcome to Canada eh!

It's like how we watch Dexter on Movie Central in the west and get treated to no 5.1 sound for it on the HD channel, and then we've never, ever had the sneak peek for the next episode.

Yeah...but how does one do that legally by paying for it? I looked into Dish Net and not wanting to do that Hu card hacking or whatever it's called I couldn't find a way to legally pay for the service (no US relatives/billing address btw)

    Doesn't solve the problem.

Montrealers enjoy simsub-free HD channels via Videotron, thanks to the lack of commitment from CTV, Global and CJNT for this market. I could also subscribe to the timeshifting channels for an extra 3$, which are simsub-free as well but they're not in HD. But since I already get Global in HD and haven't watched that channel in months, I gave it a try. Same crappy quality as in 1997.

Speaking of lack of commitment, CKMI-DT (Global) will operate a post-transition transmitter with a max ERP of only 8000 watts and CIHF-DT Halifax of only 1000 watts, while compared to CIII-DT-41 Toronto with 100 000 watts, CHAN-DT Vancouver with 40 000 watts and CKND-TV Winnipeg with 25 100 watts.
I already have difficulty to catch CJNT-TV with 11kW and CFTU-TV with 10kW, so imagine 1kW in Halifax and 8kW in Montreal.

The Canadian networks don't get the scenes from the next episode, if they do then they probably pay more for them (the distibutors want every last penny from Canwest and rightly so. Heck the stations have to pay extra for SD satellite feeds if they want them, they aren't included with the HD).

We've been through this a million times, there is no way the networks will go all Canadian. Would you watch the Canadian replacement show for NCIS?

I doubt it. Are graphics really that important? I am always happy when I torrent a show from a Canadian network (particularly Citytv, think someone gets it from Rogers On Demand) NBC runs too many lower thirds and CBS had digital water waves all summer for Hawaii Five-O.

    That wasn't annoying at all.

Oh, they do. They just prefer promoting other shows during closing credits.

I PVR'ed 90210 on Global since the season premiere. In order, at the end of the first 5 episodes, there's a promo for Glee, The Simpsons, Hawaii 5-0, Hawaii 5-0, Hawaii 5-0. But is Global airing the next week promo of 5-0 at the end of 5-0? Doubt it.

Also, don't you find it ridiculous that they finance the production of Shattered and they're not even able to produce a promo for each episode?

You bring up the subject. Not me. Don't care at this point.

There's a difference between a snipe for another show and a snipe for commercial products. And there's also a difference of snipe insertion between canadian and american networks.

The american networks inserts the snipe for another show at a specific moment and doesn't block anything like a cast/crew credit or a subtitle (location, translation) or an object necessary to understand the episode. For example, the actor finds something on the floor on the lower side of the screen, it's no time for a snipe.

CanWest inserts a snipe for a commercial product/service which is set on a timer and inserted x minutes seconds within the show, notably on Global, Showcase and as I read in another thread, on History as well. Showcase airs the "Now... Next" after the first commercial break which regularly appears over the cast/guests/crew credits.

THAT is annoying. If you want to sell a product, buy a 15-secs spot, get out of my sight during the shows I'm watching.
How come Showcase tells you what's next during each show but they can't even get a 10-secs template which lists the next 2-3 shows? Best example, TMN and Mpix.

Anyways, CanWest doesn't care about the viewer experience, they just care about ratings and advertisement sales.

That is your opinion. These tiny details that bother you don't bother regular viewers (i'm actually not even sure if they even bother you). If someone other than you made this post with all these totally ridiculous complaints I would have thought they were joking.

You are just obsessed with complaining, the fact that you actually watch the show on the U.S. network and then PVR the Global broadcast just so you can complain about tiny details proves this. Do these things really bother you that much? Are you like this with everything in life?

Most foreign programming received by Canadian networks do not contain any promos - It's just the show and that's it. Depending on the distributor, some shows do provide a seperate feed containing 0:15 or 0:30 episodic promos that can be tagged and aired by the Canadian Network.

Then could you explain why Global is able to throw in a promo for the next Hawaii 5-0, Glee, Simpsons, Survivor and others LATER during the week but never at the end of their own episode?

    Let's see...
    * Most members in this forum are already aware that CanWest sucks and therefor, pointing out Global's screwups is the same as saying it's their business model.
    * TVViewer is the forum bully and anything bad a member says about CanWest will get flamed by him.
    * The fact that I speak my mind and others don't doesn't mean I'm the only one complaining.

The fact that you're a CanWest employee and you reffer "someone other than me" complaining as a joke just prove that CanWest doesn't give a damn about their viewers.

I noticed that you avoided my concerns and actually prefered to attack me personally. Yup, bully. Maybe I had good points after all.

For the record, I PVR the CW airing of 90210 on monday, then PVR the Global HD airing of 90210 on friday and then delete the CW airing because, well, the CW is not available in HD here. Also, I know that Global won't hesitate to pre-empt any new episode of 90210 in favor for any dump they can find on their other specialties (ex: Holmes on homes) or a schedule change on any US network for a simsub opportunity.

I PVR'ed the previous 2 weeks of NCIS on Global on wednesday for the sole purpose of being able to watch 2 other shows at the same time on tuesday night 8pm. I thinght I explained it earlier.

As for my complain about Global screwing up, I'm compassionate for those who have to watch that crap happening every night. I'm also well aware that on August 31st 2011, it will be over and I will have to watch that CTV HD/Global HD crap in simsub happening.

Now, if you can't understand that and keep laughing at me over my complains about quality broadcasting, let me tell you that... oh, to hell with it, you don't understand anyway...

The promo clips don't get fed til later in the week. Usually it's a 15-second clip they get and have to stretch to 30 seconds.

It is true, Canwest Global (aka Crapwest Globull) does blow huge chunks!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhYbU97Y4p0

I'll never forget the horrible picture quality during the 2007 NFL Playoffs thanks to Global. The pre-game on FOX was unmolested from the stadium and it looked great. During the game, there was macroblocking beyond belief, and I could barely make out any of the players. There was even a write-up in the Toronto Sun about it.

The worst part was probably Global running segments during commercials for their consumer affairs part of the newscast and wanting to help you pick the right HDTV for the big game. What good is a nice HDTV if we have to suffer with Global's paltry interruptions?

100 000 watts for CIII DTV post transition? Is Global planning on upping their power after ntsc goes dark?

CBC is great and I usually can just *barely* pull in CTV but, as is, Global is the only major Canadian net I can't pull in from my location.

Global's inability to produce original content is truly sad. The only thing sadder is seeing Global's schedule of American shows posted here weekly.

Once again, if you had a choice of watching your favourite American show or a Canadian show, I'm sure 8 out of 9 times you'd choose the American show at the exact same time and day.

I don't care what else is on, 10pm on Thursday I'm watching The Office.

Same, I can pull in CBC & CTV, but not Global Toronto and Citytv Toronto, you'll probably have to be within 500 meters of the CN Tower to pick up their signal

And /A\ channel is out of the question, I don't see how they can call that a local station seeing that they don't have a transmitter anywhere in the GTA

More than once, while seeing some of the Sunday night Fox animated shows at a relative's house with the Rogers cable Global simsubs, I've seen Global show the closing credits from the wrong episode, I believe usually the ones from the episode aired the prior week. This is just from noticing the listed guest star voices, or the end of something like Bob's Burgers, which has closing credit scenes that specifically relate to the episode. I guess Global just counts on people not paying attention, or thinks no one will be able to read the shrunken credits. Whatever their reason or excuse may be, they obviously don't care about showing the correct credits for the episode. I've never heard of any other network, in Canada or elsewhere, pulling that stunt. It is an absolutely bizarre thing for them to do, since it must involve deliberate planning and preparation to show contempt for viewers, in addition to Global's expected apathetic incompetence.
Luckily, when I got home on those nights, I had set my stand-alone PVR to record the Buffalo OTA stations from an antenna, and I was able to see the parts of the shows that Global cut out.
