Last Friday's premiere of High School Musical 2 (HSM2) on Canada's Family Channel drew a record 1 million viewers, making it one of the highest-rated programs for a Canadian specialty broadcaster in the last five years.

The numbers are staggering when you consider the Family Channel is a subscription-based station available in just 5.4 million Canadian homes compared to conventional networks, which are available in upwards of 10 million Canadian households.
In addition to attracting more than 1 million viewers in the Ages 2+ demographic, High School Musical 2 now ranks as the most viewed telecast among Family's key demographic, Kids 8-14, drawing a 47.7 share.

That means almost one in two kids between the ages of 8 and 14 who were watching television last Friday night between 8pm and 10pm were watching HSM2.

In the United States, the HSM2 premiere drew an estimated audience of 17.2 million, making it the most-watched basic cable program ever, according to Nielsen Media Research. The basic cable record had been held by a Monday Night Football game between New Orleans and Atlanta on ESPN in 2006, which was watched by 16 million.

Among the US records set by the premiere of HSM2:

    • It was the most-watched telecast on any network or cable channel since the finale of "House" in late May and drew the biggest audience for any Friday telecast since an episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims" five years ago.
    • Among 6-to-11-year-olds, it was the most viewed telecast ever - including all of the Super Bowls.
    • Hannah Montana, which followed the film, pulled in an audience of 10.7 million which is the largest ever for a basic cable series episode and is comparable to the size of audience HBO received for "The Sopranos" and "Sex and the City."
    • Outdrew the most-watched network show on Friday - ABC's "20/20" - by more than 10 millions viewers.
In case you missed it in Canada, encore presentations are scheduled Sunday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. and Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT.
